hey guys, noob to the forum here! took me a good 10 goes to get the bloody image text verification last night, was going to give up lol you guys really need to make that easier! and i dont even drink lol, anyway..

this is my first pc build im ever doing, ive had abit of experience in adding things to computers, replaced my own psu a few months ago and have added gfx cards, ram, hdds etc but nothing mobo related!

im currently running a Q6600 oc'd to 3.0ghz, 120gb vertex 2e, 4gb ddr2 geil ram on a asus rampage formula mobo, bought the whole tower prebuilt for pretty cheap and overclocking was just a simple change in the bios!

so, ive purchased some really cheap components just recently and need a few more bits to build something, i have:

an ocx 700w psu
intel i5-760 retail with fan
6gb triple channel ram (looking at selling and getting dual channel)
asus p7p55d-e lx mobo

so here we go with the questions
  1. will i notice a difference between my old setup and my new setup if im just doing the normal pc stuff including browsing, word processing, watching HD stuff, unraring and downloading a load of stuff?
  2. will i notice a difference if i overclock the i5-760 to 4ghz?
  3. what ram should i get that can be easily overclocked (i should be able to sell the tri channel ram for £80ish)?
  4. will i notice a difference between having 4gb of ram and 8gb of ram? i do have a lot of progs open at once sometimes, but these consist mainly of browser windows, pdfs, word docs etc
  5. what cpu fan shall i get to overclock my i5-760 to 4ghz, or will the stock fan do it? im looking at something to be fairly quiet if possible
  6. will my mobo support a 4ghz overclock?
  7. im looking at getting an thermaltake a90 case, will the stock fans in the case be good enough and quiet enough?

thanks in advance!

All of things you want to do above can be done with a Core 2 Quad with ease. I see nothing you want to do that would require an i5 with 6Gb of ram... I mean, how fast can a person want to open a word document or .pdf file?? If your quad core is having problems with these tasks, then i think you should look at how you maintain your computer rather then upgrading it.

A computer running at 4Ghz for basically office use... thats just insane

i agree lol, the current spec im running is not at all too slow, its very fast and good enough but i bought the components for pretty cheap (about £200 for them, the ram itself is over £100) so thought i might aswell build a new pc and sell my old one

plus the core2quad range is getting a lil old and dropping in price and usb3 and sata3 are gonna come in handy so i think its a good time to upgrade imo

i will also be looking at gaming in the future when i get abit more time!

Your current spec would even be pretty decent for high end gaming though... (depending on your graphics card - which if you only have a cheap one you could replace cheaply and hugely increase performance in games).

If you got those parts so cheap and you really have some cash to spare anyway you'd be better off building it and either using it as a spare (have your own mini LAN parties lol - I do!) or sell either one of them on. They won't really be significantly different enough to warrent either one being kept based solely on hardware - just go with your personal preference.

i currently have an 8800gt which was pretty good when i bought the pc

i got it about 3 years ago now and i think its time to upgrade lol

im planning on selling my old pc on after building this, so it will only cost me about £100 to upgrade, maybe even less. keeping the SSD though

oh and i will probably need to do a bit of photoshopping after a few months so its best to upgrade
