Hi guys, Im about to build my first PC and could use allot of help and guidance from people with experience. (sorry in advanced for rambling on, its a bad habit)

About Me:

Without going into too much detail I suffer from a disability that keeps me confined to my house (mainly my room) the first thing i do in the morning is turn on the PC and its the last thing i turn off when I go to bed, so it is on & running for around 15 hours a day.

I spend most of my time playing Games (such as BF3, Skyrim, and a few random others, but mainly FPS) the rest of the time Im usually listening to music (mostly different styles of Metal & Rock ) or watching Movies & TV Shows. and browsing the internet.

Money is hard to come by for me but with the help of Family Ive bin given this opportunity to Build my first PC (as my current one is Dying) I have a maximum of £2000 to spend (& not a penny more ) I need something that will last as it might be a few years before i get any money to change parts or upgrade anything.

My Dying PC:

my current PC is a 5 year old Dell XPS (I know many people warned me about them & Ive now learned my lesson, which is why im here :o) basically old age & heat has killed it (my room is literally like an oven all the time) which has made me wonder about water cooling (some friends tell me to get it & others tell me to avoid it (unfortunately none of them are PC experts) so advice from someone that actually knows what there talking about would be great :D once again this PC will be on all day every day & needs to last as many years as possible ;)

What I Have:

LG W2261vp 22 inch LCD Monitor 16:9 DVI HDMI, Sennheiser PC 360 Headset, Razer Lachesis Mouse, Razer Arctosa Keyboard. I dont think any of it needs to be changed, Im also open to using parts from inside my current PC like the Optical Drive (16x DVD+/-RW) and the Hard Drive (640 GB Serial ATA non Raid 7200 Rpm) Once Again Im new to this So I dont know if these parts are worth keeping (or even if there Damaged with the rest of the PC, there both standard things that came from Dell 5 tears ago so there probably garbage anyway) but it was just a thought to save money :) either way Ill be following your advice.

sorry for the life story, If ive given you a bunch of useless information here instead of something you actually need to know then just let me know and Ill try to correct it :p thanks in advanced to anyone willing to help, it will be extremely appreciated.

John

Edit: also if anyone has any tips when putting everything together Im happy to hear them :) (Ive bin reading a few guides from many sites and even seen a few videos but most of them are at least 5 to 10 years old

If the most you are going to be running on is a 22inch monitor that budget is waaaaay more than you need. You can build a machine that will monster Skyrim/BF3 at native res on a 22" for £500.

For 2k you should be looking to go up to at least a 26" or dual display.

Stuie £2000 as in OP :)

Thats a BIG budget .. (something we're not normally used to on here :p) Your HDD and DVD-ROM drive could easily be used in your new build if you wanna save money, my question to you would be "Bang for Buck build" or do you want it too look uber sexy too ;) i.e themed to certain brands or colours? also do you want another monitor for dual srceening ?

Yep fixed my post with a quick edit and a build option :o;):D

Thanks for the reply's guys (I wasn't expecting them so fast :D)

the PC will be up high (on display) so it would be good for it to look nice, but its not a priority, for me its more about having something good that will last for the years of gaming to come.

as for the monitor questions Im happy with the one I have (it wasnt too long ago i bought it) & I cant think what I would need 2 for (I do occasional clone the screen onto my 32" Samsung TV but more for watching films than anything else)

1 x Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black £149.99

With your HDD what sized is it?

I like the look of that case (it looks idiot proof :D) and simple to manage cables and things :p

and on the old HDD i only know what i said about it in the first post

and yes i forgot to mention that ill need to buy Windows :D

I thought the all in one waters were generally considered a waste of money as a good air cooler was good enough without going for a full custom loop

That was a style over fuction build :) I even said to the OP that I wouldn't buy it (unless I had money to burn) but in the looks dept it would look the dog danglely bits ;)

The H100 isn't actually that bad... tho a good air cooler would do the job just as well, but the H100 is damn sexy and really sets off your rig when it lights up in your case.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far, Ive noticed that some of these builds are for water cooling, can anyone maybe explain the reason behind it to me a little more (as in is it something I should go for based on my current heat problems, is it something I need for what I do (and how idiot proof is it to setup :D )

Thanks again to those who have posted so far.

Watercooling is good if you fancy showing off or overclocking you computer, if not dont bother, I mean if your not really going to use it spend it on parts and an OcUK mug :D

If you have never done a build before don't do a custom waterloop. The closed loop coolers are the "idiot proof" option not as good as a custom loop but cheaper and on par with topend air cooling. When fitting air coolers you have to be careful with the RAM you choose. We often use low profile RAM so air coolers can easily fit over the RAM. If you have a waterblock or closed loop cooler it's not an issue.

I don't think you need to spend the full £2000 myself. I can spec a mini-itx htpc/gaming rig for you to consider. The offers change tomoz so these specs wont be "valid" for long

I have used the closed loop cooler as this is a mini-itx mobo. Having a big air cooler is going to be a pain as it could overhang the GPUs PCI slot, not just the RAM slots :( The antec cooler is second only to the H100, as i dont have to use low profile RAM i added the patriot RAM which has better CAS timings than say the Geil RAM for the same price.

IMO. Powerful, quiet, and understated. Maybe a 3770K, maybe a different case (Fractal XL / Shinobi XL Windowed, Raven RV03, 650D), maybe bluray.

Motherboard has good onboard sound so no need for a soundcard, but can go Z77X-UD3H with a soundcard if you are picky about sound. Enough money to get some great peripherals, speakers and screens to complete the build.

ok thanks, and yes i defiantly want one of those black OcUK mugs (spotted those earlier :D

I think you should go with something realistic, £2000 is a lot of money to spend on a rig.. Have a look at my spec below. It is very 'high end' without going to the 'extreme' levels of performance were you pay well over the odds for performance that will be classed as sub par within the next year or so..

  • i5 Ivybridge CPU - Most popular CPU around for gaming rigs right now, well reviewed and the successor to Sandybridge.
  • GTX 670 Windforce GPU - Very well reviewed, one of the more popular 670 models due to the aftermarket cooler.
  • Samsung 256GB SSD - Again well reviewed, very quick in real-world usage and on benchmarks. Lots of storage with it being 256GB for your OS and Games.
  • 24" LED Monitor - You need to ditch that old monitor! Or at least use it as a second monitor. Get yourself on a nice LED display at 1920x1080 and you are flying.
  • H100 Watercooler - Keeps your rig that little bit quieter, well reviewed all-in-one CPU water cooler.
  • 2TB HDD - Lots of storage for films, music, videos, games, etc.

Hey all sorry its taken so long to get back to you, the real World's not bin my friend lately :p But i still plan to move forward with the build, all of your posts have really helped me to get an idea of what I should be looking for. Ive decided not to go for water cooling as it just seems beyond my capabilities at the moment :p (once ive decided 100% on everything ill post it for you all to see (Ive also bin coached into making a video about the build, so stay tuned for a laugh at my expense :D )

One problem ive come across is where to put the PC (as space is an issue) especially Height (approximately 440mm) So most of these Towers wont work (unless I move allot of furniture around which im too lazy to do :D a friend told me to get a cube case, but I havent had much joy in finding one that will fit in all these nice parts, I made a new topic in the Case Forums but i thought Id also mention it here to see if anyone has any ideas "the surface area I have to work with is 500x850mm (Height again is 440mm) although the Height is low there is good ventilation (for fans)."

John
