First PC Build - Suggestions and Advice for a Beginner

Afternoon everyone

After a while of putting it off due to other commitments, I've finally got round to building my very first Gaming PC!

I am a complete beginner and have little to no knowledge on the majority of products, however I've had a friend giving me some advice.

Anyway, I'm not aiming to build an excellent set up due to budget constraints, more a moderate/good one to begin with that I could upgrade in the future if I wanted.

So far, the components I've gathered are as follows:

AMD Ryzen 3600 Processor
ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming MOBO
ADATA XPG SPECTRIX S40G 512GB RGB PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 Solid State Drive
Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO Black 16GB 3600 MHz AMD Ryzen Tuned DDR4 Memory Kit
Aerocool Cylon 700w 80+ psu
Gamemax ARGB Abyss Full Tower

The main issue I have at the moment (and no doubt many others will as well) is I've not been able to find a Graphics Card due to the stock shortages or price hikes.

I was looking to go for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super Dual fan card but can't find it anywhere!

So, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, or is there maybe another card you think would be better or similar that would be available now?

Also if you have any feedback on my overall build then please let me know if there's anything you think I could add to improve it!

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Hi

We cant advise you where to buy from as its against the forum rules but of course Overclockers would be a wise choice.

You have pointed ouf the lack of graphics cards so your stuck there unless you go intel with onboard graphics such as THE 10400 6 core and then get a gpu later.

Biggest concern is the cheap rubbish power supply.

Thanks for the response! Apologies I wasn't aware of the forum rules regarding retailers, I'll edit the post accordingly.

In terms of the power supply, I wasn't aware it was an issue (my lack of knowledge!). What problems can you see it causing? I was given an idea of the wattage I'd need to run my build my friend, but do you think they're mistaken?

The wattage is fine a decent 650w would do but power supplies are often overlooked due to tight budget, a decent unit will have at least a 5 year warranty and usually better parts inside which last longer and higher effiecency.

The b450 tomahawk max is a better board than the strix if you plan to upgrade to a stronger CPU in the future.

Psu is a little low on quality.

The extra money spent on all the RGB stuff could go towards components that would increase performance.

The RTX3060 is out in a couple of weeks and should sell for just over £300 while being 50% faster than a 1660 super and will also have raytracing/DLSS etc, the differculty is getting one.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll keep that Motherboard in mind for when the time comes to upgrade, cheers.

Yeah, I got suckered into the world of RGB haha. I'd been meaning to build a PC for a while and I have set up a home office for it too so I thought I'd try and make it look good as well.

From the build I've put together so far, do you feel it will do the job I need it to - which is primarily for gaming? I'm not, at this point, concerned about playing games on Ultra high settings. That can come further down the line if I choose to upgrade, I just want something that will perform relatively well and ease me into the world of PC Building.

Thanks again.

Yeah it will be fine for gaming, CPU can always be upgraded in the future etc. GPU will be the most import part and also the toughest to acquire, a 1660 super will do a job but will struggle a bit on the latest games. A 3060/3060ti would give you a really good gaming experience an be ideal for your set up but the GPU situation is bad atm so you might be forced to take what you can get.

ASUS ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming MOBO

Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO Black 16GB 3600 MHz AMD Ryzen Tuned DDR4 Memory Kit
Aerocool Cylon 700w 80+ psu
Gaming hype brand scam garbage board with wimpier and hotter CPU VRM than in Asrock B450 Pro4.
(and MSI is really only one with decent VRMs in B450)

Brand and Ridiculously Grossly Bloated overpriced memory with likely 32GB kit level price.

And wouldn't trust AeroCrap's PSU.
Which is for the start at most 650W PSU, assuming also other parts of sticker aren't lies.

Cheers for taking the time to reply. That’s encouraging, as I said, I’m not looking to build anything exceptional here just something to get me going (and due to my lack of knowledge I’ve been restricted to the advice given to me).

And yeah, I’m resigned to the fact that it’s going to take me a while to get something to be honest!

Will a B450 board work out of the box with a 3600 or will it need a bios update
Any B450 board brought now should have the updated bios to work out the box unless it's been sat in a warehouse somewhere for 18 months gathering dust, the MSI max boards definetly will though as they were released after zen 2 the first bios they had were zen 2 compatible.
