Hi;

My parents are after a first PC. I have an old copy of Windows XP, and mouse k/b and monitor they can have, so I need the rest. I was thinking this below? I won't be used for games, except when the young grandchildren visit (so more Dora the explorer than CRYSIS). They might play DVD's on it, browse and use word etc.

Looks sound, PC5300 RAM will be fine though as your unlikely to be clocking the PC.

edit: welcome to OCUK btw

claimed ;)

Thanks.

I might swap the memory for the PC5300 Geil.

If I wanted a TV card to go in it, would one of these be suitable?

Tell them to wait for the QX9650, they'll need the overclocking potential and the unlocked multiplier. They'll need some trix ram as well, so get them some DDR3 PC18500 and make sure they have at least 8gb. At least. Get them a couple of Nvdia 9800GTX Ultras when they come out in February with no less than 1.5gb of RAM per card. Set the clocks high and run everything under water. Literally. Get a couple of 24" screens next to eachother and run the DPI low. They'll need the clarity.

All that should make a reasonably-performing first PC for a pensioner, but someone else might want to chip in for the other peripherals.

have a look at the Antec NSK 4480B Mini Tower Case (Black) - 380W Earth Watts PSU, no real need for the 500w psu, with what they'll likely to want.

FYI, my media centre is:

Thermaltake Soprano case (before people say it's big, it's out of view)
Corsair VX450W
E2180 sitting at 2.4ghz on stock cooler
OCZ Reaper PC2-8500 (2x1gb) (spare from last cycle of upgrades to main pc)
P5K Premium (ditto above)
Powercolor HD2600PRO
Spare 300gb I had lying around.

Outputting sound+video via HDMI to KDL-46X3500. Runs everything nicely. Used mainly for 1080p movies, internet and playing music.

would it be worthwhile looking for a mobo with integrated graphics, as that may save you some cash? it's just a tought.
