First person RPG?

Get over the iffy early levels (the only real flaw of its RPG system is that being a low level makes combat really tedious), and you'll find no better PC game than Deus Ex.

Yeah despite what the naysayers will have you believe, DX:IW is still a good game on merit and is arguably slightly easier to get into for first time players. I played it before Deus Ex which I kinda regret now since some of the storyline would have meant more to me had I known the plot from the original.

Like Weebull says, the first level of Deus Ex can be slightly off-putting, it's a game which starts off slowly and then blossoms (Hong Kong is one of the best levels I've played in any game). This is in contrast to the sequel which gets off to a good start, the first couple of locations are good and get you involved as you learn more about the environment you are in, but it kinda peters out towards the end.

As for Oblivion, maybe it isn't the same style as the early D&D titles but it's a modern-style RPG, and it's first person, which justifies it's place on this list

I absolutely loved the first level. I remember playing the demo and knowing that it was a game I must have.

Yeah - I've seen a few people who love the early part of DX. There's some chap on this forum who was saying how there's 3 different ways he can play it etc.

For me personally I just found it a bit of a bland environment, and the combat is unrewarding. The Seattle/Cairo regions in DX:IW were more to my taste.

If you class Deus Ex as RPG, surely you'd class HL2 as the same, no?
Hell no, they're completely different.

HL2 is a completely linear, action based FPS with incredibly limited interaction with other characters, and a mediochre plot.

Deus Ex is none of these; it is very non-linear in its level design, it is focused more on the plot than the action, requires a lot of thinking, and there is a lot of character interaction. It also allows considerable customisation of your character, by way of skill upgrades and augmentations, leading to different play styles and weapons choices, which in turn affect gameplay hugely (fixed :p).

Not that HL2 is a bad game of course, it's just certainly not an RPG.

Interesting viewpoint; I think most people view the diversity of playstyles/weapon choices as a positive aspect of the game.
