I'd say the first one lacks clarity really. There are no clear features to draw the eye to.

The second one is slightly out of focus. I can't make my mind up if it's because of some camera shake or the focus was too far ahead of the head.

The third one seems perfect (baring in mind they're all far too small to be certain). You've got the position of the little fella right, the image seems sharp and the DOF seems to work really well.

I like the forth because it amuses me :D I think it's slightly underexposed though. Maybe a fiddle in photoshop (or other software you have) will bring some detail out :)

thanks for the feedback. like i said, i am very new to this so any comments are appreciated. have sorted the size out now, so perhaps you will be able to give a better judgement now. im not really sure what underexposed actually means, so i will have to learn so i know what to do about it! it was a very sunny day, so it was a bit glary on the water, maybe that has something to do with it? i was using the fully automatic setting, but focusing manually, i guess that affects exposure too. hopefully the resize gives a better view of the images for further comments.

Thanks again. :)
