First projector. Which projector is better?

If this is your FIRST projector be aware of the possibility that you're susceptible to seeing the DLP rainbow effect.

Not everyone can see it and I've no doubt that they're eventually fix the problem by increasing the colour wheel speed (used in DLP projectors) but I'm extremely prone to it and need to use an LCD projector.

Try and get a demo first with yourself and anyone else that lives with you to see if anyone you care about can see it as for me, it makes films unwatchable.

Note, that while the effect is easily created in fast moving scenes it can still easily be seen even when the image is static as your eyes saccade from one side of the image to the other, like when two people are talking on screen.

Wow didn't realise that's a problem. Not sure I would be able to view them though.

Any ideas on the best of the above?

You don't need to view them specifically - just any DLP projector will let you know if you're susceptible.

DLP's obviously aren't my thing although I think it the HD151X would take it due to the increased contrast and vertical lens shift.

I'm not sure how much of an issue rainbow effect really is with modern DLP projectors. The DLP chips are better, colour wheels are faster and some have more segments.

My sister has just bought the BenQ W1070 as her first projector and I was pleasently surprised by it! Once a few tweaks were made in the menu the projected image looked pretty damn good considering the price of the projector (sub £500). Obviously this is older than the W1080 but if it's anything like the W1070 you might be surprised also. The W1070 is very limited in positioning and zoom but just check out projector central's calculator first.

I do love Optoma projectors myself. Generally good bang for buck in most models. Currently have an older HD20 which I've found to be pretty decent....again for an older/budget projector.

I'm a big Optoma fanboy personally - they just seem to "get" projectors - never had any issues with them either (so far).

My HD70 is ridiculous - granted I do run it in eco+high altitude mode but I've rolled over the bulb counter twice lol and still going strong just takes awhile now to get to normal brightness.

I have the Epson EH-TW5200 It is very good but it can be a bit noisy, it has an eco mode which is quieter. I am not sure how noisy they are compared to those other projectors. You can get it for £550 now. The benefit to the epson is that it is not DLP but 3lcd.

Alternatively i would recommend the BenQ W1070+

That video is a bit bias though towards the benq.

I don't watch normal TV at all, but can't see it being any different. I do watch american tv series from bluray and from downloads. I have watched the occasional football stream on it, but that is usually low quality 480p playing over 1080.

I don't even have a screen, i just project on to an off white wall. I was so surprised at how good the picture was for the price and that i have no screen.

At that price range less than £700, you won't get a projector with good blacks. Nothing compared to a normal tv and no where near as good as a monitor like a dell u2412m. If you don't mind the flat blacks then its worth it.

I have an epson eb-x03 its only XGA and 4:3 but its great, brilliant for a £300 projector

Got a optoma 91" pull down screen

PJ is at 30 degrees to the screen at waist height during the day with a window behind

If you can see it, its still a problem, even the Optima LED DLP projectors that don't use a colour wheel still show the rainbow effect.

I don't see a rainbow but when I tested projector after 10 minutes I get a headache. With lcd I am fine so bought that. Maybe its better in last 3 years

This is a photo i took with my windows phone of Lost bluray on my Epson eh-tw5200 projector at 120 inch on to a wall with standard paint. The projector is about 3-4m away from the wall. The screen could go larger at that distance but i don't have the height available to go larger on the wall.

I took a video with my phone and it did not come out that great but at least you can see the projection. This is from bluray of T2 the mic is very low so there is no audio but its more about the projection. This is a dark scene and you can see how it handles it.

Hi I'm ready to order a projector as moving house next month. Question is the room is only 3m from front to rear approx so will the hd151x be able to produce a screen size of 100" minimum or will I need to look at a different projector with a different throw distance?

got the OPTOMA HD151X - its louder than my old acer HD5460 but the picture is ace.

What ever you do make sure its 1080p. Also summer means you have to black out the room if you want a crisp image so just be a way. In the inter you can have it on with the curtains open all the time :)
