Cryptocoin mining has retailers price gouging the R9 280X, they have pushed the R9 280X prices up, in fact the prices are still climbing, they all cost £280 minimum now, when released you could get one for £200, thats a 40% hike in price, making them unaffordable for most mid level gamers.

Its supply and demand, you can't hardly blame retailers, but something needs to be done.

In the past the 7950 has always been the affordable alternative to the 7970, what is now the 280X.
And now the 7950 is back.

XFX launched the sole Radeon R9 280 graphics card model in its lineup, the R9 280 Double Dissipation. The card is available in two variants, a base variant which sticks to AMD reference clock speeds, and a factory-overclocked Black Edition variant. The base variant is clocked at 827 MHz core, 933 MHz boost, and 5.00 GHz memory; while the Black Edition offers 1000 MHz GPU clock (no boost), and 5.20 GHz memory. The two feature XFX' signature Double Dissipation cooling solution that's featured on a number of its R9 280 series and R9 290 series models. Based on the 28 nm "Tahiti" silicon, the Radeon R9 280 offers 1,792 stream processors, 112 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 3 GB of memory. Expect the two to be priced between $280 and $300.

Pricing will be very important here. 280x's can be had for around £240 so the 280 will have to be notixcably cheaper than this to be worth a look.

Current preorders are looking at £220-230 which is too much. At this price range I would either get the 280x or GTX770.

I wonder if we will see prices of current stock 280x's creep up for some reason....

Yippee, more cards for miners to abuse!

//On a more serious note, provided this doesn't cost too much, we could well be looking at the sweet spot for Crossfire setups. Given that it's Tahiti and not Hawaii, the temps should be fairly controllable too, unlike my 290s which have a habit of having staring contests with the sun.

Hasn't the Mt Gox thing made a difference to mining, or is this a completely different coin to what others are doing?

Sorry, slightly OT but quite relevant to the price gouging that retailers are doing.

Ok, here goes (yes, I'm bored and it's a slow day at work :p)

Gox was only Bitcoins / cash. It was a cloud that's been hanging over the crypto world for ages and due to the CEO being about as transparent as a piece of sheet steel. This drove the price of Bitcoins down considerably so interest started waning. As more and more pressure was put on Gox, they dragged it out as long as they could without actually providing any answers or official statements. It was literally like watching a fat kid fall down some stairs with cake all over his face in slow motion.

The kid then hit the bottom and Gox was forced to shut its doors. Whilst many have lost loads of cash, the overwhelming relief from the crypto community is brilliant. Basically people are glad that it's over and done with, and this is reflected by the price of a bitcoin almost doubling since Gox filed for bankruptcy. This of course has inspired more confidence and people are getting interested again.

From a mining point of view, it's impossibru to mine bitcoins on a GPU. For this reason, we mine "alternative coins" which are then added to exchanges. We mine the ones which have the highest value to Bitcoin, and then sell them.

TL;DR is that Bitcoin is glad that Gox is gone, and miners are still going at it like randy rabbits.

Lol @ competitors selling these for barely less than OcUK sells the 280X, OcUK FTW! :P

It's kind of sad that before the mining boom HD7950's were £160 new and barely over £100 used. Now their over £200 new :(

Oh my god it's 8 Mhz faster than the 7950B was and only £50-60 more, TAKE MY MONEY!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

Dear god I will be able to get the same KH/s as two 750Ti's for the same price and only use 350% of the power :O

------------

Seriously though if the reference model (or IceQ blowers) is actually available then I will actually snap up a couple as the reference 280X never seemed to appear and the 280X IceQ blower seems to be vapour-ware.

You could get a 280x for £200 on launch? I bought as soon as they started appearing in the UK, before many retailers had stock and I paid around £230 which was roughly as cheap as I could find.

I know we should take care of our planet and be much more environmental minded - but I think this recycling thing really got out of hand among graphics cards.
