Hi guys
I have recently used my old components from an old machine to setup a mini server at home. Its a Phenom II 955 with 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 750w PSU, Asus M4A785D-MPRO board and a 1TB WD HDD. The main use for it is going to be streaming media backing up photo's, Music, Videos from my other machine and laptops etc. I would also like to schedule images to be created as well and stored on the server.
The problem is i am not sure what OS to go for, i have been doing a lot of research and learning about servers and I would really like to setup my own mini domain at home. I have been looking at server 2008 R2 but i just cant justify the price of it. Would installing a server OS instead of say windows 7 give me any real gain? I understand if i install windows 7 i wont be able to setup a domain and play with AD etc and be able to have it setup as a domain controller which is what i would love to try and do.
What do you think would be the best way to go for what i plan to use it for?
