Ok, not my first shots, but the first ones I've wanted to try and improve.

Now, this was actually a 'fluke' photo, in that I didn't focus in on the candle setting with the sole intent of taking a picture, but it turned out alright, and I'm wondering what I can do to improve it (I have photoshop/Lightroom) but also some tips for future shots of a similar nature.

This one I was trying to get my cat to pose for the camera, but naturally she wouldn't, but I liked the out come anyway. As a photo it's pretty redundant though I think, not much to it and nothing going on - since cats are notoriously bad tempered models I'm not too concerned about it. But any tips for this kind of close up work would be appreciated - I've only got the canon 18-50mm kit lens for close up work.
