I've wanted to take up photography for a while and I've decided it's time to bite the bullet.

My budget is £500 (max) and I would prefer to buy new.

In this price range it looks as though the 2 contenders are the Canon 650d and the Nikon 5100 and from what I can tell the Nikon comes out slightly on top.

So, for £460 I can get this - Nikon D5100 Digital SLR + 18-55mm + 55-200mm VR Lenses, it also leaves me with enough for an SD card.

It also comes with a case, a spare battery and a screen wipe.

This seems like a pretty good deal to me but you guys are the experts! Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks a lot.

If you're in two minds about whether to go Canon or Nikon then I'd recommend finding somewhere you can hold both cameras and see how they feel. Functionality & performance is usually pretty similar between competing models from each manufacturer and a lot of it comes down to personal preference on feel and control layout.

As for lenses i found a 35mm 1.8 and a flash was more useful than a long zoom lens, what will you be shooting and where?
Also consider m43 system they are just as good as crop sensor dslrs.
