i am planning on having a play with linux on my current pc. At present i have vista installed on my C drive and i have cleared out 100gb on my d drive with the intention of putting linux in there....

Am I liable to run into any issues with this? will a bootloader be installed when i install Ubuntu ?

Nope, perfectly good setup. If your bios supports booting from a different hard drive ( F11 key possibly, could be wrong ) then you might want to install the bootloader ( grub ) on the MBR of the second (100gb ) drive instread of the MBR of your windows install. Saves fixing your windows MBR if ever you decide to remove Linux.

All seems fine, just remember to backup ALL your data on all your drives before installing linux.

Personally I have a seperate HDD for windows and a second one for Linux, when I want to re-install an OS I unplug the pther drive, this 100% avoids destroying data due to GRUB/windows bootloader issues.

cant be that bad surely :-)

everything looks pretty good. the fonts are different but not really causing any issues..

just installing virtualbox OSE so that i can have a play with some software that isn't available in linux.. to see how it functions

the reason behind my toying with linux is that i am looking to migrate my mother over to it. she currently uses her pc for nothing more than browsing and playing mp3's... toe catch is that she uses itunes with her ipod and i know that there is a problem with getting it running under linux

yeah, they do but they don't allow access to the itunes store... which the old dear swears by...

you would think that Apple would be making a linux port by now considering the amount of netbooks that are coming with linux...
