Hi all, I'm VR curious and looking for some advice, I've done some research to the point that I'm going round in loops so hopefully someone can nudge me in the right direction.

I've recently started sim racing at a pretty casual level and I’m interested to try VR as it sounds fun. That being said I've not used VR much except for a few times at work but that was more novelty than intensive use so there’s a chance that I won’t get on with it. Games are typically AMS2, Assetto Corsa, and sometimes the F1 games.

It looks like the mainstream option is the quest 3 however I’m flip flopping between the 3 or the 3s as in a quick search the 3s can be found quite a bit cheaper on the 2nd hand market (~£80-100). On top of this my PC options aren’t the most powerful, I have the choice of:

Desktop: ryzen 5600, 16GB ram, RTX 2060

Laptop: ryzen 5600H, 16GB ram, RTX 3060

So not much to pick between the two.
Part of me thinks just get a quest 3 and have a go, worst case is that I don’t like it and have to sell it on. Well, worst case for my bank balance is that I decide to spend out on a GPU upgrade.
On the flip side I could go with a 3s for less outlay and potentially have a better match for my slightly aging systems.
Dumb question, is there any benefit to going for a 3s to compliment a less powerful system?

Any help appreciated!

I'd always steer anyone who asks that question towards the Quest 3 purely because the pancake lenses/optics on the Quest 3 are so much clearer, with a larger sweet spot, than the fresnel ones on the Quest 3S. IMO that alone justifies the extra cost.

Yes that tallies with the general advice I've seen, thank you. I guess one thing that I don't have a feel for is whether I'm just going to have a terrible time due to the age of my sysems, the GPUs in particlar. And then whether stepping down to the 3s would ease this at all? Accepting my lack of knowledge the answer may well be that the model of quest makes no difference?

IIRC the resolution of the 3S i slightly lower but I'd expect the performance difference when using PC VR would be negligible so I wouldn't let that influence your decision. Budget permitting Quest 3 is abolsutely the one to go for.
