Get the tattoo artist who specialises in the type of tattoo you want. Then speak to the artist and explain what you want and what you're unsure about. They can go through the options and how they can adapt things to what you from existing ideas etc.
I've drawn all of my tattoo out by hand, taken them as an idea to an artist then they've taken that and formed something similar based on their experiences.
ps I wanted a biomech tattoo - all my locals I wasn't keen on and didn't see much so I had to travel 50miles to Octopus tattoo in Derby to see Gerry.
