Well, having dropped out of uni I have the telephone interview for a job coming up in about 3 hours. I've never done one of these before, and they didn't really give me any real information about it.

So I was just wondering what I ought to expect?

What's the job for?

Usually it's just to find out how your telephone manner is and a bit about yourself.

If they like you, then you will get a face to face interview.

Just speak politely, calm and clear and you won't have any problems. If they ask you something you don't know, just be honest.

I wasn't expecting a phonecall at all, my GOD!

I meant, does anything tend to be different from a regular interview etc? Usually?

it will either be a slightly informal chat with one of the managers or a HR drone firing off standard questions

It's for a job entitled "Customer Service Advisor", basically it's a call centre job for one of the big UK companies. Not the most glamorous of jobs, but reasonable pay, some small promotion options, and also it doesn't matter if I leave in a couple of years, since it's not exactly a career.

when I had a phone interview for my job at Logica it was all about finding out how I dealt with people and situations involving people, nothing about the technical aspect and nothing about the company, not even a "what do you know about logica?" like you usually get in face to face interviews. Phone interviews tend to just be all about you.

There will be pauses where the interviewer writes down notes etc, don't feel you have to fill these pauses, just wait until they start talking again.

My one was full of questions like "Give me an example of where you have exceeded someones expectations, exceeded being the key word" and then after I answered the question it would be something like "what did you learn from that?"

EFFORT!

Urgh I hate those kind of questions :( I can never think of a situation of anything they ever ask, and half the time end up having to bullmanure my way through it :(

That being said, thanks for the potential heads up :)

i've had many telephone interviews, it's a 2 way street, to find out if they think you're suitable to bring into a face to face interview and for you to ask about the company etc.

It's varies on the type of job you're going for,
mostly it will going through your cv, you explaining what you did, etc,

some HR fluffy questions, eg. give me an example of how you worked in a team, were there any issues and how did you overcome them.

and possibly technical questions (depending on job)

You also get feel for the type of company and what the role entails.. it's mostly about not wasting each other's time.
