just ordered Vista home pre, i have all my data on a 2nd drive so will format the c drive and do a clean install,

any tips or 'must do's' after installing ?

great cheers for the tips, anything else i need to know? i have kind if played around with it, but will be quite deskilled i guess :(

Nah, Vista is the way to go, yes you lose a few fps gaming, but overall it is a better base than XP, and it's the future, like Garlic bread!!

don't get me wrong i love XP and will keep it on my laptop, however i need to get to grips with vista, and like it or not it is the future

While you wait, get all the latest (Vista) drivers for your hardware i.e. mobo, gfx, etc. I'd install these + anti-virus before updating Windows ;)

disable windows defender real-time scanning

basically it's scans everything as you use it

better to set it to scan once daily, otherwise it'll slow down your pc

personally i do that, tweak uac (silent mode), disable hibernation, disable system restore (and offline files etc)

pro tip. :p
one thing i also do (it takes a while to do manually, but i don't know of a tool to do it for you) is specify the folders you want indexed, and untick most of the filetypes that it's got selected, I only let it index.. mp3, txt, lnk, exe, avi, mkv, jpg, vob, iso, 7z, zip, rar

doing this really speeds up your search results and doesn't have any crappy files that you don't want in it :)
