Hi guys,

I am new to building PC's and have decided to do so more for the learning experience than cost saving, even though that would be a nice bonus! I am a final year university student and have had a laptop for my first two years and had the JBL creature speakers (2 years old now) for my small room at uni! My laptop overheated or something and now the motherboard is gone...therefore meaning I might as well get a new system rather than paying stupid amounts to fix an old laptop.

Now I am at home and I need a nice build! And some advice from you enthusiasts and beautiful people....

What do I need? Here are some details:

-Budget is around £650 (can be a bit over if you think my budget is not enough).

-I am not a PC gamer at all.

-I run a few websites and make a bit of music on my computer. I use photoshop quite a lot and generally multi-task a lot when on the computer. I use my computer all the time so I don't want it overheating again like last time.

-I am a HUGE music fan, with about 20,000 stored music files that slowed down my old laptop! Perhaps this is something you may think is a valid point when referring to how my hardrive should work.

-I want my PC monitor to double up as my TV, to plug in the old PS2 (if possible) and watch films etc. A TV card (for freeview) could be added but where I go to uni these do not work because of reception issues (in the middle of nowhere) or whatever. But at home it should work, this may be an option for me.

-Have thought about getting a decent sound card, even though my speakers aren't crazy, I may upgrade these in about a years time, or even now if there is something really worth buying. Advice would be appreciated. Was thinking of a 5.1 system.

-My TV does not have to be that big at all, but a decent size to fit on a small-ish table.

-My household has wireless internet because we all had laptops, but now my desktop PC should be able to connect wirelessly.

-Remote control would be nice to control music playing from the computer.

-I don’t mind paying for a very quick processor, I had dual core on my laptop which is two years old now, so either a very nice dual core again or even the quad core. Would prefer to upgrade to quad to be hoenst.

-Should be major ventilation in the case and not too loud.

I hope to hear from you all soon with some great recommendations, what I should consider, examples and please could you just write a quick note as to WHY I should choose the ones you recommend. Thank you all!
I appreciate the help.

That's a bit of a whopping first post.

So, basically you want a whole system, including good sound card for about £650? You don't play games. You don't need it to be whisper quiet, but you'd like to actually hear your music over the volume of the fans? You want the monitor to be a good size and double up as a TV Yeah?

lol

yes indeed you are right. sorry, I do tend to write a bit too much! thanks for your reply...any ideas what exactly I could go for...is the budget not enough? from having a browse around, it sounds about a good enough budget to me....

yeh thats a healthy budget to be honest - although finding someone willing to take the time to actually write out a fully budgeted list for you will be a struggle! lol

If the total price of the spec included both cases (as your right theirs two in the list)...ide remove both and get an Antec 300.

Total of both cases = 190..
Antec 300 = 35

Then your down to your budget.

P.S and the second case the Sonata come with a 550watt PSU and The Corsair VX 450 is in the list also...very confusing spec indeed.

LOL!

Sorry about that, I changed the spec midway, and forgot to get rid of the Antec and Corsair!

Two cases are generally not needed...

Yeah, the Antecs, either the 300/VX450, or the Sontata Plus 550, are good choices. The latter will be a bit quieter, but the first keeps your temps down... depends what your priorities are with this system. I have edited the first post I made to make it make sense.

lamboman, thanks for your advice!...

To judge how quick a computer will be I know is a weird question because im sure there are lots of things to take into account. This is so I know what to look out for when buying parts.

Obviously I can understand the processor is the main thing, but will extra RAM for instance make a lot of difference? Also in regards to the hardrive, what should I look out ? I said I had that big problem of having to wait AGES when my laptop came on before because of all that music that was stored on it. How can I improve that problem?
