Hi,
As you may have guessed, i'm completely new to the world of computer building and overclocking (the most complicated thing i've ever done is change a gfx/sound card, although i do have a reasonable knowledge of the current computer tech), but I am planning on building a quad-core/ddr3 gaming machine over the summer to replace my current setup. Obviously this wont come cheap, and i really dont want to risk damaging expensive parts due to inexperience.
Whilst i know people who i'm sure would help, i would really like to learn the ropes myself, so was thinking of a practice build/overclock to begin with. I'm not sure what you guys think of this, and whether or not it would be better to just get some help and launch into a build, but i was thinking of putting together a pretty cheap system that would let me overclock/try a RAID array etc, that could then be used as a linux based, or perhaps media pc.
I was thinking of something along these lines for the system spec (from OcUK):
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.00GHz (800FSB) - Retail (£54.04)
Mobo: Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£76.36) OR OcUK Value IP35 Pro Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (£70.49)
Memory: OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (£28.19)
HDD: 2 x Hitachi Deskstar (size not too important) for RAID array
Drives: SATA DVD drive
gfx: Have two 7600GS replaced by 8800GT
PSU: Something like OCZ StealthXStream 500 watt PSU
Obviously any input on spec would be helpful, but is this a good basis to learn the dark art of overclocking??
Thanks very much for any help,
Chris
