Hello OCUK

First time builder and looking for advice on parts, OC and cooling.

Fractal Define R5
AsRock X370 Taichi
Ryzen 1700
EVGA SuperNOVA G2 550W 220-G2-0550-Y2
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 AORUS 6G GV-N1060AORUS-6GD
Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB
Hitachi - Ultrastar 7K4000 2TB 3.5
Hitachi - Ultrastar 7K3000 2TB 3.5 x 2

Build should be silent and I would like to reach the 3.8 - 3.9 GHz / 3200 MHz (or more if possible for the RAM only) mark with the system being stable. Like to set it up once and then use it for work and forget about the hardware/tuning until I decide to upgrade in the years to come.

The use is multiple VMs simultaneously for coding/web development, fluent offline 4K video editing and general video/dvd/bluray encoding, Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity Designer and the very odd game or two though if I do gaming it should be decent. If possible I like to run this 24/7 for encoding video & P2P in the background.

For cooling the CPU I am thinking about the Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 as I assume that also gives airflow to the rest of the parts in the case. Also happy about good watercooling options (no idea whatsoever there) but fear that will only cool the CPU and not create an airflow in the case for the GPU and PSU. The case comes with fans, perhaps that is enough for creating airflow and watercooling is better for stable CPU @ 3.8 - 3.9 GHz stable?

Also not sure if the PSU is enough for the GPU and the CPU running stable at 3.8 - 3.9 GHz with the Aorus ideally. Did run all the parts through a voltage calculator and got 350 or 400 W usage I think, not sure any more. Though there is no option for OC the CPU and I hear that might drain a lot more W from the PSU, would be good if the PSU would be used in their best degree of efficiency, so not too much and sure not too little.

Concerning RAM I would be super happy for it to run at 3200 MHz stable, ideally having 32GB, but happy with 16GB as well if must be to run at 3200 MHz or more. I guess if it is available at all it would be better to have 2 x 16 as opposed to 4 x 8, right?

Been looking at this fantastic bundle https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...z-1800x-performance-smashing-bundle.18775270/ but since I am not in the UK or even the EU I fear high import tax rates. Otherwise I would go for the pre-configured option and get on with work as opposed to tweak Bios and OC Profile. Will check with OC support for weight and dimensions of such a delivery as that was missing in the import tax calculator and will also check with local customs to see how much that is but think for the price of the import tax here I can buy the graphics card. Will surly check though.

Looking at the bundle I was wondering if I could use 2 x Team Group Dark Pro "8 Pack Edition" 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black with the parts above and get 3200 MHz by default? Happy to pay the import tax on that only if I can be sure it will work nice with the rest of the parts using the Bios and OC Profile provided in that bundle.

Also, and I guess this is most important for me, since I am a total beginner at OC, will I be able to at all use the Bios and OC Profile from the Taichi bundle linked above? I think I should since I would have the same parts, right?

Tremendously happy and grateful for decent advice, like to get this build done and get on with work, miss working/coding/designing.

It's been three month since my old workstation decided to quit on me after 8 years of solid and brave 24/7 use, the graphics card has an hardware error and since it is a laptop workstation there is no way I can exchange it, also the old graphics card won't support 4K editing, so here I am building a PC and while doing so working on an even older laptop barely getting work done.

Also if I buy a PC that is assembled here locally already I will pay much MUCH more including parts that are not as good, I don't want that and so I am very happy to put great effort into getting a decent build done. Please help me get this going, thank you very much, after a lot of research already I think I have come to the right place to ask these questions, fingers crossed.

Cheers

as you've posted @8 Pack uses the board in his bundles and rates it highly, noticed you havent put down ram so would suggest you use his Team Group 3200Hz at least . I got lucky with my Corsair 3000hz 32GB kit but memory is a bit of a lotto, much improved but nice to know youve got a much improved chance .

Your selected PSU will be fine , Based on Superflower but EVGA have a few things added at their request

**just saw your mentioned the ram but to lazy to delete.

the aorus card is a beast ! since you are abroad RMA would have to go back to OCUK or Gigabyte UK but OCUK does have lovely customer care and Gigabyte reps on here to lend a hand - hopefully you'll never have to RMA part but worth a chat to OCUK staff

It might be worth biting the bullet and getting the Pre-tested Bundle - as the Bios and platform matures, sure you'll get a chance to tweak it yourself. the 3600hz kit is only £15 more at the moment, might not be able to run it full speed just yet, but will get there :D

You can save some money on the motherboard by going with something like the Asus Strix B350-F (Unless you need the extra features on that board).

Thank you for your tips! Much appreciated.

What about cooling?
Noctua or a water kit?
Are the case fans enough with water kit?

I think I might stay with the Taichi since there are also a lot of videos on it out, so perhaps if I get into tweaking I already have what I might need later plus it would support higher RAM speeds later on as well.

Using the same Taichi and 1700 will the Bios and Profile work if I use other RAM or is the RAM tied to the profile?

Why the 14 and not the 15?

There is no NH-U15 there is NH-D15 which is a dual tower monster of a cooler. You just don't need it for 4Ghz on that CPU. You can easily get by with the single tower U14.

Also you don't NEED the Taichi board though it is excellent. The Strix B-350-F is an excellent board that will afford you the same CPU/RAM performance at a lower price and it looks the business as well.

The only reason you should get the expensive board is if you actually need all the features it has. I'm happy with my $110 ASRock Z97 Anniversary. Some people just don't need high end.

I currently have Strix B350-F motherboard and totally love it! It has enough features for what I need and looks damn good
The only "bad" thing I have to say about it is the RGB light on the chipset is placed weirdly, which looks great until you install a big GPU and it covers it.:(
Still glad I chose it though.
