First time build - PC wont post.

Tried the sticks individually, no luck, the fans do not start off at a high speed and die down, they just stay at a steady speed.

So is there a 4 pin that attaches to the 20 pin connecter? if so where would it go, because the 20 pi nconnecter fits in its slot perfectly.

The ATX connector has a detachable 4 pin connector so it can fit 20 pin ATX boards. If you have no free ports on the main ATX connector then you may have it connected, try doing a quick count :p

Edit: thats correct - the 4 pin connector.

Unplug all your components from the motherboard - memory, GFx, HDDs, etc.

Reset the CMOS, and then try to boot. If you have no error beeps then the mobo very likely has a problem - assuming you have the system speaker connected properly so you can hear the beeps.

I note that your motherboard specification (both v1 and v2) states:

1 x 24-pin ATX main power connector

are you sure its only 20 pin as you state above?

the 4 pin connecter goes into the slot nearish to the cpu right?
Yes; just above the small PCI-E_1 slot, and to the right of the front panel audio header.

Speaking of headers, make sure all the connections are the right way round on the F_PANEL header. I hate those things with a vengeance. I see yours has the PWR_LED separate to the main header - that's unusual.

Manual is here, for anyone who wants to join the fun - http://europe.giga-byte.com/FileList/Manual/motherboard_manual_ga-ma770-ds3-e.pdf

I had the exact same problem with one of my builds. This may sound wacky but sometimes when you install the motherboard in the case you can cause a short. I simply removed the motherboard and re-seated it in the case and hey presto it worked. If that doesn't solve the problem then I guess the motherboard is DOA.

Good news - I got the PC to boot up by reseating the cpu, im now trying to install windows xp but when it gets to the final part when its saving your settings, it just stops there, (it doesnt freeze) the bar just stops going, tried waiting about an hour, that didnt work. Im guessing this is a RAM problems?, voltage adjustments maybe?

I would guess it's not RAM or voltages - just another failed Windows install.

Have you tried just repeating the install? Sometimes that's all it takes.
