Looks good to me.
What screen resolution will you be playing games at?
Are you planning to overclock the CPU?

probably 1680x1050 for games. not totally sure yet.
i might overclock a bit. that's pretty much the question - is the set up ok and will i be able to overclock well.

You should be able to get a nice overclock with that. I'm not sure what the CPU cooler is like though, so if you want to push your CPU to the limit then you might want to research CPU coolers.
The Thermalright Ultra-120 is a good CPU cooler, but it is expensive.

If you're going to be using a screen over 1680x1050 it might be worth getting the 1GB version of the 4870.

Are you planning to use Crossfire in the future?
If you're planning to add another 4870 in crossfire later on you'd need to get the Asus P5Q Pro motherboard which can support crossfire.

at the moment i'll be sticking with just the one card. if it means loweriing the screen res then i'll deal with that.

i've done some research into the cooler but not loads. i'm trying not to spend too much more. there were a couple of other options i'll try and get names/links.

The 4870 is a great card and will be able to play most/all games on high settings even at 1920x1200.

If you think you might put in another 4870 in the future, then you will need the P5Q Pro board. The standard P5Q board quoted in your first post does not support crossfire so you won't be able to use two cards if you wanted to. AFAIK that's the only difference between the P5Q and the P5Q Pro boards.

i was thinking about keeping the first set up for a while but then re building a new pc after.for now i think i'll stick with the P5Q and look into crossfire or whatever else is about then.

Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Socket 775, AM2, AM2+, 939 Processor Cooler £29.99
Arctic Cooling AC-FRZ-7P Freezer 7 Pro Socket 775 Processor Cooler £14.95
Scythe Mini Ninja Socket 478/775/754/939/940/AM2 Heatpipe Cooler £26.01

they were a couple of other coolers i looked at.

thanks for the advice so far.

Yea i'd switch to the P5Q Pro board too :)

Just so you can keep your options open for adding another card as "Zildjian" stated :)
