Ok,
I have a friend that is about to something really stupid. He is 17 and getting a saxo westcoast 1.4i and its around £2200 to insure as an additional driver as a boy. He found out that he can get it at about £1000 if he says he is a girl.

Can you guys tell me the consequences of this so i can tell him not to risk it?

Thanks

They'll find out from his licence and then void his policy. I'm sure if they see a girl by the name of "Michael" or the like the company will question it. He's being VERY daft.

PS. Tell him to get his own insurance, fronting isn't big or clever. http://www.4youngdrivers.co.uk/ done me a great deal on my 1st year on the road.

So they will just find out by looking at his licence? Will they fine him because otherwise he will just risk it. as his name is Tyler which can be a girl’s name.

Lol he is so dumb for thinking this...

If he does it, he's an idiot. He will get found out, either at the roadside when the police try and tally his licence with his insurance, when they do the paperwork or when he needs to make a claim. The thought ever even entered my mind when I was getting quotes. He might get away with it but when people start digging deeper then he'll be found out.

If it's HIS car why is he getting someone to insure it and add him as a driver? So he's planning on Fronting and Lying about his sex. I'm sorry but your mate is the kind of person I utterly despise. He needs to stomach the first year, earn some NCB and everything will work out. If he can't afford the insurance then he shouldn't drive.

It wont be possible, especially if he chooses to pay monthly, as the checks needed for credit etc will show this up.

Bottom line. If he does it, and crashes the policy will not be valid, meaning any claim comes from his own pocket. Slap him one from me, as its idiots like this pushing up premiums!

So he wants to front the insurance and claim he is a girl?

Tell him if he cant afford it he shouldnt drive

Ok just gunna slap him and tell him not to be so stupid....

Thanks for your help guys. I'll show him this thread

I'll offer a bit more useful advice. If he gets his own policy he can earn no claims bonus. In my first year I had to pay £1400, with just one years ncb the same policy the next year was £600. If i didn't have my ncb the second year would have cost me £1200 to insure my car. Riding on other peoples policies does not work out in the long run and can result in a claim being refused. Get him to shop around, mainly with specialist companies who deal with young drivers. Get him to explore the possiblity of the Pass Plus course as this cost me £180 but I claimed back £90 from my local council and it saved my an absolute packet on my insurance.

To be honest, the NCB thing doesn't stick up well half the time.

Insuring fully comp with a normal, non classic policy on the Mini in my own name is £1800 or more. (Around £1000 on a classic policy!). If I fronted the first year I could get it for under £700.

With one years NCD and my age as 18, quotes are about £600. Without that 1 years NCD, which I won't get with a classic policy, they are about £800.

There's literally no financial advantage to not do it for most drivers!

Tell him when he gets found out (not if) he'll find his policy voided, and potentially be done for fraud "obtaining money or services by deception" I believe is the phrase, and then he'll have a really fun time getting any insurance (or for that matter loans etc), not to mention the problems it can cause for future jobs/travel (the insurance companies really don't like people who have tried to defraud them).
That is of course assuming he doesn't get caught during the application process.

Not a lot to worry about compared to the saving he might make...

It's fraud in every sense. You really can't mess around with financial services! The insurance company will void it, but lord knows what the police would do if they pulled him over.

Some insurance companies search your credit file now to verify your identity before offering cover (an unrecorded enquiry so isn't taken into account when applying for credit) - the UK Insurance group seem to for example.

Straight away that'll show up the discrepancy in sex - they aren't stupid, I'm sure other people have tried it before and got caught :)

He sounds like a complete idiot. If he does that he'll be paying around £100 for void insurance, he might as well drive without insurance (Don't do this.) Either way he'll be caught.
