Hi all. First time doing a bbq, and I feel I have a lot to learn. I bought a cheap oil drum charcoal bbp from argos, and now whats next? What kind of charcoal do I need;is best, some say I shouldn't light the charcoal with a lighter, so what do I use please. Also I'm into recycling a lot, what can I do with the bbp ashes, can I use them as grass fertiliser?. Sorry in advance if the post is scilly.

I use those formed charcoal pellets because they're uniform in size and burn down evenly.

I use paraffin based firelighters because they're much more effective at getting the charcoal going than the eco ones.

Buy a chimney starter.
Buy some natural firelighters.
Buy good charcoal.
Put a couple of the firelighters on the grill.
Light them.
Put the chimney on top.
Wait till it looks all hot.
Pour the charcoal into HALF of the bottom.
Sear your meat above the coals (keep a close eye on it)
Move it to the other side to finish with the lid on.

Something like that :D

Nobody else amused somebody is asking "how do I BBQ" ? it's like one of the simplest things man can do, that man has been doing for 10's of thousands of years

here you go

There's a bbq thread in cuisine. Chimney starter is useful, as are the wooden fire starter things.

I use the weber briquettes, mostly because they're pretty cheap in my local garden centre.

Make sure the bbq is not anywhere near lots of dry grass/bushes/dehydrated tree because obviouosly you can start a nasty grass fire

only saying this because some sod near me decided to have a bbq last year, and well later that day the whole street had to be evacuated because the grass fire that was created (big field at back of his house with lots of dead overgrown moss stuff) could probably be seen from space

First don't use too much lighter fluid. Can smell that from several BBQs round here and at my parents'. The food must taste of lighter fluid! Not nice.

Then some people BBQ far too much. Remember about 18 years ago, when I lived in Wakefield. Four lads had a BBQ a few doors down from me. They went round to neighbouring properties to ask if anyone wants to come to their BBQ as cooked far too much food. They BBQ'd about 22 sausages, 16 burgers, 16 of the pre made kebabs you get in supermarkets this time of the year and other things. As my ex was on his brother's stag weekend, I went along with another couple. Had a brilliant time and gave the two brothers whose BBQ it was a crate of beer as thanks.

If you are eating inside on a normal day, you just cook one of the meat options

Use proper barbecue charcoal. Read the bag carefully and do NOT mistakenly pick up house fire coals or anything of that ilk.
A lot of places like B&Q and petrol stations may stupidly put them all next to each other.

Light it however you wish. I start mine with newspaper and wood, using either my Zippo jet lighter or a long match.

Ash can be mixed with animal fat to make soap.
There's also this, but I have no idea how accurate it is: https://www.allotment-garden.org/garden-diary/7668/using-coal-ash-as-a-garden-fertiliser/
