Hi All,

Firstly let me give you a little background on my requirements. My girlfriend and I plan to take a year out and travel South America early 2010. Of course we would like to capture all we do and see on film so to speak; hence will need to purchase a camera + relevant accessories for the trip.

As a total novice I have read through the basic buying guide in the sticky, as well as a similar basic overview on http://www.dpreview.com/ both of which have given me a small insight into what I might like to look for from what seems like a sea of available cameras.

The bulk of the pictures we take are likely to be landscape / portrait type stuff as opposed to action / sports etc.

Ruggedness is clearly something of a priority, however after nipping to a local store today and asking some basic questions it sounded like anything that was 'weatherized' was going to be some way out of budget.

I'm looking to spend around £500(semi flexible) to get going, but may pick up some extra bits later in the year as I get snapping and get a feel for the camera.

If you were in my shoes what kind of rig would you purchase?

I'm not too fussed on new vs pre-owned but I don't know where to look to pick up pre-owned kit.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

I have a Nikon D60 im looking to sell ;) its on the Members Market here but you cant access it yet. Very user friendly camera and have the standard kit lens (18-55mm) and a longer zoom lens (70-300mm), also have a rather handy Crumpler Pretty Boy XL bag which is weatherproof. If interested drop me an email in my trust :)

If weatherproofing is a priority at reasonable prices look at Pentax.

Bennie-Mac - thanks I had a quick look at a D60 in the shop today which will certainly be a contender for what I purchase - I've sent you an e-mail.

BUFF - great thanks for the suggestion I've just taken a look at an online store and the Pentax K-m is weatherproofed and under budget, including 2 lenses. I like that the shake reduction is also built into the body.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

I'll try and find some reviews of the Pentax kit now.

K-m isn't weatherproofed, you'll need to look at a K200D for that (plus the mkII kit lens, the original version wasn't weather sealed). The K200D weather sealing is spot on though, I've tested it thoroughly :p

I've just realised that after reading a review, it was however listed as such on the website that sounds like a rainforest. cheers for pointing it out all the same :)

Its got to be said D200's are wonderfuly tough, personaly im a big fan of nikon stuff, but the D60 with a few good lense is a good choice too, personally i'd spend more on lenses than the camera.

Further to the above does anyone know of anywhere I may be able to pick up a 2nd hand D200 aside from the obvious auction site?

All your help has been much appreciated :)

Don't discount the S5 Pro Tearz, it's a D200 with a Fuji sensor, it sacrifices some speed and MP for an expanded dynamic range that is arguably just as useful (especially in bright sunshine), it also tends to be usefully cheaper (though was dearer than the D200 when new), takes (obviously) all the Nikon lenses and flashes.
They can be had for £499 brand new, delivered, on a certain auction site
