Hey, after being stuck in the dark ages on 3Mb down ADSL, we finally have fibre in our area.

I have gone ahead and upgraded with talktalk as I still had existing time left on my contract.

As part of the offer they are sending their own "Super router", and if past experience tells me anything, free routers from ISP's are generally garbage.

I recently bought an ASUS DSL-N55U N600, and I am assuming that this will now be defunct? or can I still use it?

This is my fist experience setting up with fibre so I'm not sure what I should be looking for

If not can you recommend an alternative?

Thanks

You can retask one of the LAN ports as a WAN port. Google 'DSL-N55U EWAN' and you should find the necessary information. This assumes you've got a FTTC modem to plug it into, and I'm not sure what TalkTalk provides you with.

You've also got the option of just using the N55U as a wireless access point.

When my in-laws went with TT fibre last month, they sent out a Netgear router, can't remember exactly modem but it was Wireless N and wasn't the worst out there. TT still use a BT Openreach modem (which the Engineer will bring with him) so yes, you can just ditch the TT supplied Netgear and plug your Asus in direct to LAN1 (LAN2 will be covered over)

I've also just upgraded to Fibre with TT from ADSL2, there was £90 cash back through topcashback.

When the BT Openreach modem is installed can I use any router? Would a cable router work fine if I was to put my login details into it?

Almost anything sold as a cable router will work on a standard FTTC connection. It just needs to have an Ethernet WAN port and support for PPPoE.

Life can get complicated with Sky and their MER authentication, but AFAIK all other ISPs are okay.

Good man for the reply! Gives me a chance to upgrade my TP-Link router.
