First time making a site, feedback please.

I have to say I'm not a big fan of the template, 's quite hard to read and whoever coded didn't seem to do a very good job of making the titles fit inside the area they're supposed to.

If it's a blog you're after I suggest you go for www.wordpress.com, the templates they have by default there are a lot easier on the eye!
 
Freewebs is an appalling free host aswell , there's much better ones for £0 :)

It's currently not loading for me , will give you my opinion soon though. Just looked at it , template site , instant turn off :P I suggest you make an account on a blogging website and just keep to the content , which is quite good :)

Thanks for the feedback. And Tr-Insanity thanks for the warning about freewebs, as I was about to pay $4(USD) for 5GB bandwith and 400mb web space plus some extras.

I appreciate the positive remark on the content though. We hope to keep that coming. And yes We're not huge fans of the template ourselves, but until we get another one going (which is in the works) this one was the easiest on our eyes out of the choices.

Okay we have made some changes and done a lot more custom html vs. the template we had before. My main question is since we are now using adwords and adsense, Is this site inviting?

Should I do away with the fire logo?

Is the color scheme appropriate? Is it hard/easy on the eyes?

Does your monitor overlap the sidebar?

I feel it needs more.. standardisation, what I mean by that is all of the blog(?) titles all the same size and colour. And all of the post needs to be structured in the same layout, like picture on the top right and text top left and continue below. And no offence but I feel the logo at the top needs a bit more effort.

But at the end of the day it's probably a lot better than what I done for my first website so congrats :)
 
It's hard to read and doesn't display correctly in IE6 1280 x 1024. I'd suggest looking at similar sites to the one you have in mind and seeing how they've been implemented. Colour schemes and styles are very important, poorly chosen ones will stop people reading your site and coming back. ;)

Good start though.
 
Must say, the text is fairly hard to read anhd the white reply boxes don't fit into the theme at all :(

You would be better paying for your own hosting and installing wordpress as the site resally does looking 'templatey'.
 
Thanks a lot for the replies guys. The logo indeed does need more. And the layout doesn't always display right on some monitors but I cannot stand the really narrow layouts. I think I would rather add a horizontal scroll bar instead. As far as hard to read that's where I differ and am having problems. To me, white layouts are far too bright and make reading harder on the eyes. I was trying to go for something that does not make you squint. What specifically about the text is hard to read for you? Size? Color (background color)?

I really want to make this as good as I can, which is not going to be the 8th wonder of the world, but at least something people may visit here and there.


Also the comment boxes do not really bother me, as I think js kit is better than most comment kits. I like that you can comment as a guest without ever signing up for anything, and it still keeps you comments together when you click on a profile. The comment box we have now is only to get us by until we actually have more members. The thought was that more people would rather just comment like this as opposed to signing up. But once we had enough member sign up we were going to go to a system that uses your login name and pword.

The Site Content is what we're asking though in general. Do you guys think we have what it takes to do this? I mean there are a lot of lives out there that would make a good book, but not everyone lives a life they can blog about.... That's a quote or something. lol. But besides the templatedness (we're not pro's) what do you think. I mean when I'm surfing the web I don't click on a site and say, hmm... their logo sucks... or hmm..... it looks like they're using a template... .hmmmm.... HACK!
 
That page took an age to load :o on a connection which has the ability to download @ 1.4MB/s
