Hi, Alex here.

I am going to build my own gaming pc. I have about £550 budget. I have built a PC before so I wont need any assistance in terms of building the actual pc. I just need a little help on what works with what etc. I have thought about a build but I don't know if all the components 'go' together. I will be playing games like Minecraft, World of Warcraft and Counter strike-source. I will not be using any components from my old pc to go into this pc.

Thanks,

Ac24alex. :)

Have you got a hard drive in your current PC?

Definitely not worth getting a new one at current prices due to the floods. Use an old one if you have it and wait until prices go back down and then pick yourself up a 1TB+ hard drive.

I do have a hard drive yes, but I think I may need a new one anyway, because I keep getting 'Disk Boot Failure' every so often. Also the hard drive I have atm is IDE and is only 320gb

Personally, i'd pay the little bit extra and go with;

Its over budget but the 2500K is perfect for gaming and its easy enough to over clock. Plenty of guides online to follow. You're also missing a CPU cooler from your spec which would push your spec up closer to the cost of the one I've done anyway. Save/spend the extra if need be and get the better system.

For the games you've listed (esp WoW) you'd be better off saving money on the GPU and going to a quad core i5. 8GB RAM isn't a bad idea either at current prices. You could get 8GB Kingston 1600MHz for only £3 more.

an i5 2500K is the only real choice CPU wise, it's only a tenner more than a 2300, has higher stock speeds and gives you the option to overclock in the future.

The Nvidia 560 is overkill really, An ATi 5770, Nvidia 550Ti or 460 would breeze through the games you listed, and would handle any modern games on high settings without any issue. The more powerful cards power is currently wasted unless you're running 3d/multi-monitor gaming or 1920x1200+ resolutions (think 23" + monitors)

As stated above, if you can use an old HDD or borrow one (as long as it's not ancient, anything that's SATA should be quick enough) you can save a few notes there as prices are currently inflated to two or three times the "usual" due to thailand floods damaging the factories.

If you don't plan on overclocking get an H61 based motherboard, they are less than half the price.

Great, thanks AberystwythLAD! :) So whats this about the cooler? Do I need one ?
since ABlad has specced the OEM processor then yes you would need a 3rd party cooler

if your going for ABldas kind of price, then i would recommend something like this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x HIS ATI Radeon HD 6870 IceQ X PLUS Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **OcUK Exclusive** £149.99
1 x Intel Core i3-2120 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £101.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £99.98
1 x XFX 650W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £71.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) £69.98
1 x Cooler Master HAF 912 Case - Black £49.98
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) £29.99
1 x OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £17.99
Total : £604.49 (includes shipping : £10.50).

i have only put the i3 2100 processor in for now since you plan to upgrade to ivybridge because this freed up more money for other stuff, and meant you wont be wasting as much money on a processor you'll be getting rid of soon

the motherboard allows crossfire at x8/x8 speed, has all the Z68 goodies and will be able to overclock your ivybridge processor

the PSU is also ready for crossfire, is 80+ silver rated and is modular

the graphics card has an AMAZING cooler on it so will overclock well too

Ah, but Zarf, I've thought about instead of wasting my money now on a processor I might aswell get the Ivy Bridge when it comes out, which is why I bought the Z68 mobo
