I am sure this has been done before but may as well go for it as I am bored.

So my first use of net was 1994 at uni, some guy on first day told me about the 'world wide web thing' - I assume, and showed me how to click the netscape(I think) 'icon' although we wouldn't have called them icons back then, and the rest is history, didn't think it was that big a deal back then as not much on net. First mobile was about 1996, I think, at uni, some girl had a early nokia one - thought it amazing. Before the net and mobile communications it was all word of mouth and meet at a certain place if you were going out, so different, wish I had it when I was at school though.

God, I miss those days. When you went out with people and you just stayed with the people you were with. No phones on tables. No-one having conversations with others people on the phone, no-one going outside to take calls. People not cancelling at the last minute because they couldn't.

I hate mobiles.

1994 I got shown the internet when dad sorted out a 33kbs modem to work from home at his massive Unix work station. Got to go on the Chelsea fc website that didn't load properly in Netscape for Unix. That was fun, his Unix box only did 128 colours, no idea why, and was a beast of a dual pentium! (Wish I still had that case as it was massive).

Mobile was early 90's as well, dad and mum had these old nokia bricks with the little aerials, that was rubbish, only started to like phones properly in the last year or so, before then they were just toys to text people and break a lot.

What's your point?

I first used the internet in late 1998 at university. It was initially in their IT building on WinNT computers. Then in early 1999, I got my 1st PC and had it hooked up in my uni halls on a T1 connection. Of course by summer, I was an internet addict and I needed to get myself hooked up back at home. Gutted I was to find out for the first time how slow a 56k modem was compared to a T1! Thankfully, NTL broadband (medium tariff) gradually got faster, up to the point where it matched T1 (1.5M) around 2004/5 time.

First mobile phone was a Nokia 402 in year 2000, aged 22. Yeah I know, late on the bandwagon and all that. Even then though, that was an old model, more like a hand-me-down. Kept it until 2004, then I went contact and got a much more up-to-date Nokia 6600.

The days of the grapevine, pub and telephone were far more interesting than they are with all this instantaneous mobile communication. It was a pleasure to meet people and catch up with all the gossip. People had people had real friends instead of hundreds of virtual ones. These days you know it all before they do.

Ah, 300/600/1200 baud modems, BBSes, private wires, acoustic couplers, breeze block mobiles......

The real days of computing, the internet and communications. :D

first internets was about 1993? 9600 baud modem on compuserve, went on lucasarts website and it took about 10 mins to download the jpg on the splash screen

you couldnt use the internet in those days when the USA was awake because it just slowed down to nothing lol

first mobile was my dads - analogue jobby, battery lasted about an hour and you could only use it inside the m25!

When I went on the internet there wasn't even a search engine and you had to know exactly where you wanted to go.
I was used to Bulletin Boards and at the time didn't think it would catch on :D

I was late with my first phone.
It was probably around 1999 and was a Philips D12 that I naughtily soldered a chip onto to get free calls.

Let's (starting here and now) make it a social faux pass to get out your mobile in the pub.

Never going to happen, but it's a nice idea.

I do think it's rude to leave your phone out on the table, as if you are just waiting to be taken elsewhere from the company you are already with.

But I like everyone gets their phone out at some point.

My first mobile phone was a Nokia 7110. I was obsessed with the slider, and ended up breaking it. It was a fantastic phone for the time, though, and snake was highly addictive with the scroll wheel.

I don't remember when I first used the internet, but I remember creating my hotmail account in November 1999 - then discovering nobody I knew had an email address. Good times.

First use of the Internet would have been around '96 when I started secondary school. They had a modem in the server closet that must have been 28k tops, running Netscape. Had to get special permission to use it.

Fast forward a few years and it didn't really take off for me until the days of Freeserve, IC24 and the like. Used to tie up the phone on Wireplay playing Red Alert or direct connect to my mate (DON'T PICK UP THE PHONE MUM.... *Out of sync*).

Didn't have a mobile until sixth form, which was a 3210. One of the rich girls had a 'Matrix phone', the one with the spring loaded cover. A few weeks later we all had them on our 3210s thanks to the 'xpress-on' covers :D

Good times. Let's not get too sentimental now chaps, things are better now. Yes I also miss the days where you had to be somewhere on time planned in advanced etc, but as a grown up social networking really helps keep in touch with friends, now that they're all around the world.

My first phone was an old motorola brick, Then I got myself a V2288, Much more stylish! Had both in school though.

I do not remember my first use of the internet. I do remember downloading 2 700mb files though over a 56k modem. :D Oh that was fun

Infact I just remembered, my first real use of the internet was on work experience at the college, 90% of my time was spent on Mirc :p and using netscape navigator
