first watercool build

was looking again at coolants, the corrosion inhibitor i was going to get is poisonous, not really something i want around with a dog around, just incase of leaks and spills....

looking at the fluids on offer at overclockers, would these do the same job as the water, PT Nuke and the corrosion inhibitor? both are non toxic, which is what im looking for.

PrimoChill Liquid Utopia Protective Fluid -WC-000-PM
PrimoChill Pure™ Extreme Coolant - Clear - WC-050-PM
or
PrimoChill ICE™ Non Conductive Coolant - Clear -WC-049-PM
the second one says:
Special corrosive inhibiting ingredients to prevent sludge build up and galvanic corrosion.
so im presuming this does the same job as the anti corrosion stuff i was going get, but i dont know if the first one does this aswell as it doesnt say.

if i decide i want it to be coloured, i could add a dye bomb too, but the dye getting gunk in my loop over time is what i was trying to avoid with the feser.

As long as you get all copper waterblocks and rads etc you shouldn't need the corrosion inhibitor. Also if you're going to use PT_nuke you should just get a 5l bottle of deionized from halfords for £3.50~. It's a lot cheaper than all the feser stuff and just as good.

WJA96 - did you pay for your friend to do the metallurgical study? and if so, what did he find?

None of the units examined were finished to the advertised specification. I'm currently trying to find out exactly who manufactures Swiftech's stuff so we can check a few other claims, but Swiftech won't actually tell us what country they are made in (it's not on the box, which may well be illegal), let alone who makes or plates them, and actually that might be what actually hangs them with Trading Standards rather than the actual finish on the product as you can't contest the fact that they didn't disclose the country of origin whereas they could attack my expert witness, plus if TS take them on, I don't have to pay for it;)

You should use distilled water a) you dont know how old the halfords stuff is and b) if it leaks it will still cause some damage

Distilled and dionized water both have very few impurities which make the water more conductive (even without they are still both slightly conductive and could easily cause damage when spilled). You could also you the "you don't know how long it's been there" for any distilled water you buy, not just deionized. The amount of time they have been on the shelf also makes little difference as the containers are all sealed.

Not true.

You have the water distilled to order hence why it takes 10 days (medical use). Distilled water has virtually all of its impurities removed through distillation.
Deionised water has had its mineral ions removed, such as cations from sodium, calcium, iron, copper and anions such as chloride and bromide. However, deionization does not significantly remove uncharged
organic molecules, viruses or bacteria.

The lack of impurity in the distilled water means that the system stays clean and prevents a build up of bacteria and algae. Also, the low conductance leads to less risk of electrical damage in the event of a leak or spillage. This enables the machine to work at optimal efficiency even after extensive periods of time without water exchange

And
Over a period of time the plastic bottle will leach solids into the water. So only a 6 month shelf life to ensure 0 parts per million Total Dissolved Solids. Also once opened, gases from the air will be absorbed by the water increasing the chemical content.

Distilled Water + PT Nuke = all you need.

All these pre bottled coolants are a load of nonsense, you don't even need corrosion inhibitor as you're not running mixed metals.

You're just going to be increasing the thermal resistance of your coolant if you bung in dye and other kinds of unneeded crap.

For medical use I can see where you are coming from, but water loops don't require such high standards.
As long as you use a biocide to kill prevent the bacteria in the deionized from clogging up your loop etc then the chances are you will have no issues using it, and it will still be less conductive than the "non conductive" collants that are advertised.

But, water is an excellent solvent, and so if de-ionized water is put into a water cooling system, it will corrode the water blocks to get its ions back.
