Hey guys im having a bit of difficulty here and was hoping one of you fine chaps could help me out.

Basically im moving into a new house in the next few weeks and im looking at getting a nice new fish tank. Ive managed to work out what ill need to run it and it comes to 138w.

What confuses me from here though is how to work out the hourly consumption of that and then how much that will cost me (on average of course) to run on 24/7.

If I did the calculation correctly the kwh would be 3.3kwh.

Im a bit unsure if I did the calculations correctly and even then I cant figure out how much ill need to pay roughly per month to keep this thing running 24/7.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

You have to know how much it costs for your electricity per unit, probably somewhere between 8-15p per KWH.

Works out as 26.5-49.7p per day.

Op how big is the tank, that wattage seems pretty high! I had a 3 ft tank years ago and it had something like a 17w heater and a 20w light, the small pump can't have used more than 10 I assume as well.

My leccy is 11.68p per kwh, I did what you did and did: 138 x 24 (hours) = 3.3kwh

3.3 x 11.68 = 38.5p per day

38.5 x 30 = 1155p / 100 = £11.50 a month (using 30days as average for a month, maybe better to do it x 31 as its better to budget over than under in my exp)

The tank is 6ft wide, 17" depth and 28" high (actual tank, the stand is an additional 28" high).

Thanks guys thats a lot of help.

I wasnt sure if I was doing it correctly or not :)

maybe 2 36w t5's for a 94litre tank is a tad too much for my tank. My electric bill is up about £5 more every month due to my new tank I reckon

Ive been doing a bit more nosing around and im not fully convinced this tank I was initially going to buy is great for what I want so im gonna go ahead and ask if any of you know of anywhere I can get a decent tank setup for what I want.

Im intending on getting a coral/reef setup going and ive got little over 9 foot in length to fill. Obviously the tank doesn't need to be flush with the wall and its probably better if it isn't (for cleaning and whatnot). Id like to aim for something around or over 500L of water capacity.

I dont necessarily have a budget as if its something I can't yet afford then ill work up to it.

Any ideas?

Also advice on what equipment ill need to go with it would be great. And again power consumption if you can but if not I can look it all up myself. Many thanks.

Ahh, ok, not you're average tank! :p

Wasn't sure if you were doing the typical OcUK thing of massively overexaggerating power consumption.

500L and upwards are generally custom jobs.
However, check out red sea. They do some spanking large tanks but come with a huge price tag on some!
Aqua medic also do great marine tanks, but i honestly have no idea what size upto.

No im generally going for a big bugger :p

I have a 9foot long wall to decorate and how better than a nice big fish tank! :D
