Fishing - Anybody doing any ?

nice, you gonna take it to a field and try some casts with it?

not just yet .. only one place local that has the necessary space.. and it's hot & sunny = packed with non-lead-proof people.

This is how it reacts with 8oz suspended..

I think with 6oz + bait it's going to be a hooligan!

maybe in a couple of weeks we'l see how it bends with a Smooth Hound from the beach on the end of it :D
did you see the vid i sent you of my Smoothy from Selsey? i think i might have had it listed as private when i sent it to you Doh!

The something special smoothie video? Yup - it works :)

i was going to make another vid the last time i was there.. but only caught a 6" Bass and an 8" baby smoothy :( tbh the smoothy fishing there has been a lot more miss than hit this year, as has the rest of the south coast.. they seem to be more around the south east/Kent coastline this year, SMB Sept?? ;)
still be worth a trot down to Selsey as we planned though...

Looking forward to both!

I've prepped the spigots (i.e. bit of wax and rotate so snug fit with some to spare).. work is busy and been gardening.. so going stir crazy for some fishing meditation!

May make a set of mack feathers for a giggle.. shoved em out and get some bait/supper if they're still around.

You should have seen the bend in the little 20-50g (8-12lb) spinning rod with the pollack and two pout.. it was only the hyper loop's drag slipping that protected it! It's none the worse and you see the skipper thought that looked fun because he was pishing himself laughing. At one point I thought - am I going to see the side of the rod split and the spigot sticking through?

I've booked a holiday to Costa Rica in Jan. Looking at what fish will be about and its Rooster Fish season!! I'll have to save hard and book a charter!

I saw the Thresher on the BBC. The big sharks seem to be getting more common, there where two 300lbs+ caught within days last year that I seem to remember.

Have you got a link or any info on the Turbot?

Can't find it now.. was all over the place in the last two weeks. Picture of guy in floatation suit in the water with it.

Hi,

I've just come back from a holiday in France and one of the places we stayed a small cabin with its own lake. There was a fishing rod (and some tackle there no reel) which I tied a bit of line and a hook to and had a go at fishing with. To my surprise I actually managed to catch about 11 fish which I think were roach and had a really good time doing it.

I'd like to have a go in the UK and am lucky enough that there are a few fishing ponds very close to where I am.

If I fish at a private pond which charges a fee do I also need to get a fishing license from the post office?

I like the idea of float fishing what list of beginner kit would people recommend?

Thanks

I fancy getting back into fishing again. Any decent kits that I can get that have everything (rod, reel, seatbox, hooks, shot, etc) in to start with? Or do I need to buy separately?

Course fishing I mean...

A fishing licence would still be needed (https://www.gov.uk/fishing-licences/when-you-need-a-licence - http://www.postoffice.co.uk/rod-fishing-licence).

Here is an excellent video by Matt Hayes that will walk you through everything you need for float fishing on a lake.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5mbRbTWIvo

Edit: He's targeting Carp in that video but it's basically the same for Roach, just maybe use lighter terminal tackle (the hook end).

If it were me I'd buy separately, there's some really good gear about these days for not that much cash. I've never been that impressed with the full kits whenever I've looked at them.

Make a list of the main tackle you need and get that first, then get whatever terminal tackle you need.

Bobco (http://www.bobcotackle.co.uk/) usually have bank holiday discounts/sales on, with the next one being on the 29th.

Also, http://www.maggotdrowning.com/forum/default.asp is an excellent fishing forum I visit regularly.

Thanks Dr.Eddie I did think you may need one as well.

Oddly enough I watched that video not long after making the first post and found it very informative.

Any items that might not be obvious but are really useful when getting kit?

What are peoples views on this kit as a basic to get a bit of everything needed to start?

Korum Kit

I already have a 13ft Mega Match D.A.M rod from when I was very young so may just be better to get bits separately?

If you already have a rod I would look to buying the other items separately.

If you are float fishing, a pair of polarized sunglasses will help you see your float on those sunny days as well as let you see fish under the water.

Check and follow the rules of the lake you intend on visiting. One important thing to find out first is whether they want you to use barbless hooks or not.

Aldi occasionally have fishing special buys on and you can actually get some good quality gear. I got a little tackle bag for about a tenner that will hold quite a lot of gear considering the size of it, and I also got a couple of pairs of polarized sunglasses for about £3 each, so definitely keep an eye on their site.

For a reel I'd go for something in the 3000 size, probably for about £20 or so.

The main tackle you need are basically a rod, reel, seat, bank stick (and head) or two to rest your rod on rather than laying it on the ground, landing net and handle.

Then you want a main reel line, if you're going for Roach you're looking at maybe 3lb main line paired with a weaker hook length of maybe 2lb. A couple of clear wagglers (floats), some split shot (a tub of varying sizes is probably the best) and some small hooks, spade end is better, probably barbless, and a couple of sizes, maybe 16 and 18 depending on what your bait is, and some bait - Roach love red maggot - maybe even some worms or sweetcorn to help get the odd Perch or Bream.

You'll need a disgorger to remove the hook, which is a lot easier if you're using barbless hooks. A plummet (and a spare) to help you find the depth of the water in front of you.

You might want to consider an umbrella or waterproof jacket or something, but not vital at this stage.

Look on YouTube about how to spool your reel properly. Find out how to tie the hook length to your main line - there's a few different knots and methods so just experiment until you find a knot you like. If you decide to go with spade-end hooks you're best off getting a hook tier (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHrAIOU9Lrs). They are awkward to get right at first but after a while you'll be able to do it blind-folded.

Go Outdoors usually have a good tackle section and you can get good gear for decent prices, but definitely shop around. Find a local tackle shop (vital for bait) and don't be afraid to ask questions. Be honest with them and tell them you're just starting out and they'll look after you, if they don't then find somewhere that does.

Expect plenty tangles, snags and frustrations when you first start out but persevere and you'll find you get less and less.

Casting a waggler can be tricky at first so my advice would be don't try to get the waggler out as far as possible. You usually find that species like Roach are right in front of you in the margins, so many a time you can just drop your hook a couple of feet out from the rod tip.

Just a few things off the top of my head, I probably missed a couple of things, but if you have any questions or would like me to give an opinion on possible gear purchases then feel free to ask away.

I'd definitely go and register with MaggotDrowners as it is a mine of information, full of people willing to help.

^^ nice post
a few lakes local to me require you to have an un-hooking mat, regardless of fishing style or intended catch, so thats one thing to also consider
