I was in the loft a few month back and found my old fishing tackle.. Rather than flea-baying the whole lot I decide to take my son fishing in a local lake.

It's been 15 years since I’ve been and we had a very successful day.. My son caught a wide range of Bream and Roach under 2Ib and I caught a few bream around the 4lb mark and right at the end of the day a lovely 15lb common carp caught on a swim feeder with a mix of bread and sweet corn.

Since then we've been to a couple of venues around Chelmsford and we are both finding this to be a good experience. It's actually not an expensive hobby either and it means we get to spend some quality time together.

Last Saturday, we went to another local lake and caught around 30lb of carp between us. Great day apart from when my rod was sent flying into the lake and I had to go in after it.. “Dad, I think you have a bite” lol

I have found however, venturing in to our local tackle shop a bit daunting. Things seem to have moved on a bit so I’m quite a novice again.

I'm quite interested in taking up carp fishing and I’ve bought a few new rods and reels. I’d also like the occasional course day (not match).

I would appreciate any hints and tips..

Actually, why not post anything to do with fishing in here.. Pictures, venues, methods, hints and tips.

Will post a few pics later :)

15lb carp? thats some doing after such an absense!
Yep, i wish i'd caught that when I was younger.. My poor son was so excited.. we were just about to pack up when -- bosh!!! My poor wife was waiting for me in a car park for half an hour whilst i got the damn thing in.. took some time.. I have a pic and will post later :)

I'm not sure what these empty cages that look like a bomb i've been seeing in the shops?

Another vote for the 'method'. Get a few method feeders, squeeze some groundbait round it, stick your hookbait into said groundbait, hurl it out and watch your rod bend. Me, my brother and father never fail to take well over 70+ lb of carp in various waters using it.

ahh I hink that's what i've seen.. so basically squeeze the bait around the weight.. and cast off.. ehmm does it not come off during the cast? do you need a special ground bait?

hi, yes you need something like crazy bait gold, (but keep it fluffy, without any particles, and fish dead maggots (read - freeze a bagful over night soaked in scopex) and stick 2-3 on a hook under layer 1 of groundbait, and then put layer 2 over the top and squeeze tight. its best for warm/shallow to medium depth waters where the carp are biting.

:) i'm still surprised it doesn't come off..

I tried luncheon meet on a hair rig last weekend.. found that to be very good.. I had to ask the shop how it was done :o

Right I've bought a couple of Carp Raods and a big bag to keep yhem in.. Stupid question but it says it can hold "made-up " rods.. How does that work then since the rods are 12' in lenght :p

Next purchase is a couple of carp reels.. I thought I'd build my collecyion of gear up during he winter months.

well u make the rod up, and then split it back in half and lay the 2 rod pieces together Butt to Tip. keep the line and rig tight, and it should be ready to use when u get to the water.

how much u wanna spend on the reels? for me the best options are the 6000 GTE (doublehandle) baitrunners. mint, designed for the job. (if u want a halfway house, grab a 5000GTE u can use for feeder/spinning and carp/piking, and a 6000GTE and get the best of both worlds. howvere will cost u about 100-120 quid.

crikky - i'm not that serious about it to be spending that sort of money tbh.. I just picked up a couple of Wychwood 2.75 carp rods for under £50 on fleabay.

came just as I was tidying away for the day.. Caught on a single corn and swim feeder. Size 16 hook as well..

:)

Wa roughly around 15 - 20 Ib and took about 30 minutes to get in as i only had 6Ib line. It was an amazing feeling and it got me hooked. haha

It was in August sometime taken in a lake in chelmsford town Centre Admoirals park would you believe.

I read recently the lake was dug out for clay and soil to fill the giant pillars of the railway viaduct which is just to the side.

The lake is the one at the top section...
