Fitbit - is it an effective random number generator?

I was told by a colleague at work who has one of these that flicking the fitbit registers it as a step. So minor movements seem to register as steps

Just shaking mine about doesn't register as a step, nor does flicking it, I'd say, for me its pretty accurate, except the flights of stairs. If I'm honest, the main things I do with mine is use it as a silent alarm in the morning, and check my heart rate in the gym occasionally.

then he hasn't got it set up right. needs to turn the sensitivity down, or stop throwing his arms around like hes walking.
once set up its pretty accurate.

I don't think FitBit needs to be overly accurate to be honest. If you treat the "Steps" more as "Activity Points" and don't get too hung up on it being perfectly accurate then they are bang on. I use mine in the Gym and to see notifications while at work (Not allowed phone out when on duty)

I find the FitBit is a poor steps measurement device, frankly in my personal experience it is miles off, to the extent it is close to a third or even a half over sensitive. A simple move of an arm and you have a step measured. I have worked with what settings you can but I find it miles off. Have had 2 of the devices, as has my wife and both have been the same, no matter what wrist I wear it on or what I set as my prime wrist.

I always get more steps if I wear the Fitbit on my right wrist compared to my left. No idea wtf is going on there.
