Intrested in what opinions people have on the above companies.
I have both near me, and I'm leaning towards Virgin Active.

Anybody got any constructive comments or opinions?

I go to one called U-Fitness (not sure if thats a national chain). It costs £40 a month for me and my gf and you get use of all the machines anytime, a sauna and a pool. You can also go to any of the classes (yoga, boxercise etc) for free. When we looked at fitness first, it was going to cost £40 each. There isn't a Virgin Active near me, so I can't help you with that.

12 month contract with them costing me £40 or something on direct debit.

The + side is

Has more than 1 treadmill that doesnt smash you into the mirror which is a plus for me!
Lots of cardio equipment
Good weight range
Dont have too many mess abouts

Down side

At busy times (mainly evenings every week day) theres no chance of getting any weights equipment (cept free weights) and it gets annoying when a group hogs a machine they dont use but just lean on and chat
The punch bag is in a studio which is used 99% of the time (the studio for classes not the punch bag)
DONT EAT FROM THERE

Thats about it, all in all is a good gym when I compare to my old one and this membership card can be used at any virgin gym

Yeah the thing swaying it for me at the moment is the fact that with Virgin Active you can use any one in the country. I travel a lot with my work, and I am often away from home.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I'd favour Virgin Active over Fitness First better facilties and VA has a swimming pool.

However for £40 a month I find my mountain bike, weights and going hill climbing keeps me fit and doesn't rip me off!

I see your postcode LE65, not sure which Leicester Fitness First you would be thinking of. But I am a member of the one on Raw Dykes road right by the Walkers Stadium.

It's quite good, main reason I go there is I can walk to it and when I come home from uni for holidays and such I can use my same membership here too.

Depending what time you go it can get pretty busy on the free weights, cardio equipment gets rammed with the 5pm after work rush too.

2 sets of dumbbells, plenty of free weights, squat rack, leg press and about 6 benchs. So for freeweights it's fine. Only one benchpress bench and no decline bench but can improvise.

Plenty of machines too if you use them and they dont seem to get hogged as much. Others upstairs too.

I can reccomend it, from my point of view. However I solely use freeweights and ocasionally use cardio equipment (prefer to just run outside).

Didn't realise Fitness First doesnt have a swimming pool. I guess it will deffo be Virgin Active then. Swimming pool is another reason I wanted to join a gym.

£40 to me isn't a lot to spend per month, to have access to facilities that I plan on using frequently. :)

Well spotted, but I spend most of my time at S2

Edit* Also im not too fussed about it being busy after 5pm. Because I don't do a 9-5 job. Some days I'm quite often at home during "off-peak" times.

Swimming pool would be nice facility to have. Would be good sometimes if my gym did.

If the price difference isnt too much I'd go for virgin active (never been myself but from what people have said here)

Well, I went up to Virgin Active, was shown around by a very competent membership consultant. Signed up on the dot :)

The one in Sheffield is really nice inside, I was really impressed. An added bonus is that they have a climbing wall. I can use my membership across the country so Im a happy bunny.

Pitty I cant use the facilities until Thursday night now, seeing I am away working. But it all looks good, and my induction is booked for Thursday too.

Cool, sounds really good! I wish I have more facilities like climbing wall, swimming pool etc. But will just have to do :)
