Hi guys,

Recently purchased my first flat and I'm looking at getting some fitted wardrobes in one of the bedrooms (length of ~3.5m).

My question is - what are people's experiences with the likes of Sharpes etc.? Would I be better off going with a local carpenter in terms of cost/quality?

I don't have the exact value, but the property was built around 1900. I'd imagine the height is >2.5m (i.e: higher than average). This is kind of the reason I'm going for the fitted option to make the most of the space...

I'd go with a local tradesmen. That what I did and we got the units from Germany much better quality. All the places like Sharpes, Better Bedrooms, etc are all too sales driven for me.

Be prepared.

The cost for fitted wardrobes is immense. I've just bought 400 and the cost for a 3m long wardrobe is £6k and a cheap version £2k

If its over 2.4m you could go with IKEA Pax and make it look fitted. I went that route after a 2k quote for a bespoke one. I'll get some pictures later.

I cant remember the exact price but when I compared it to the likes of better bedrooms it was very competitive + the quality was a lot better.
Depending on the amount of units/layout allow for 2 men x 2 days and you wont be far off the labour cost.
The units I went i went for were from Disselkamp http://www.disselkamp.co.uk

We had this fitted by Hammonds in a bedroom last year:

Walk-in, cost around £1,400. But then it's quite basic, with a couple of rails, a built in chest, and some shelving inside.

Lots of people at the time said I could have got a similar thing for half the cost with a local joiner, as above. So you pays your money I suppose. I just added a push-to-break switch with some LED lights inside, as electrics and lighting were not offered.

Our experience was a mixed bag. The end result was good, but several aspects of the process leading up to that final result were not.

+ The initial assessor was a decent bloke and knew his stuff. He gave good options and recommendations for the type of wardrobe we needed for the space.
+ It's quite an awkward space and they made a good job in the end of the installation.
+ The quality of the construction is decent, robust fixings and hinges with good quality materials.
+ The second installer (snagger) did a quality job of resolving our issues.

- The first fitter didn't do the best job. It was pretty good, but there were a few issues like panel gaps, curved lines not matching the curve of the ceiling, and panel splits that weren't on the design drawings.
- The surveyor that came to measure up and check the initial salesman's solution was a cretin and made loads of mistakes, which were only discovered when the fitter arrived.
- After we weren't happy with the first installation, it took months to get them back out to rectify the problem. Meanwhile they hounded us for the final balance with legal letters, messages were left unanswered, promises of call backs were made and not honoured, we were kept on hold for 20 mins+ before lines just went dead, the call handlers were thick, etc.

So, the experience had more negatives than positives, but all was good in the end.

We actually asked Sharps to come and quote, but the bloke called an hour after he was meant to arrive to say he couldn't make it as he was late with his previous appointment, so could we call the call centre to arrange another appointment! Not "Very sorry, I'll sort it out for you, can you manage tomorrow?". So we sacked Sharps off straight away.

I got some fitted in my bedroom at home. Admittedly they're only about 1.8mish long but they are top to bottom fitted units, with cream gloss doors and dark wood carcasses and a set of built in drawers too. Look really really nice and he did a wicked job. From a local builder, think it cost £500ish in total.
