fitted new cpu strange boot up

hi,a few days ago i swapped out my E8400 for a Q9650 & now have a strange boot up problem,
i'll list my spec's first off.
Asus P5Q PRO
Intel Q9650 (was E8400)
ATI HD5870
2x2gb Geil DDR2 800mhz (dual channel)
Hiper 850w psu
Windows Vista 32bit
all running at stock speeds.
my pc's not up to latest specs by a long way i know but it still plays the lastest games fine (including Witcher 2 on max - uber sampling).
any road after i fitted the new cpu & cooler i updated the bios to the latest version & my system runs fine appart from a strange boot up.
when the pc is totally off then switched on it starts to boot up for maybee 1 second then the power light on the front panel goes off & the fans stop for 2 or 3 seconds, then it boots up normally.
if i just reboot my pc it fires up fine i.e. with no stop.
it never did this with the old E8400 fitted so i wondered if maybee the cpu wasn't getting the correct voltage.(but i know very little about such things)
every thing on the bios is set by default to auto.
i did set the cpu voltage to 1.2125v (as suggested by a freind)to see if that helped but to no avail.
is there anything i can do to "cure" this problem or should i just stop worrying about it.
all help gratefully recieved,
cheers
Neil

Check your RAM voltage settings also as the auto setting on the motherboard often sets it wrong. (The settings are normally on a sticker on the RAM sticks).

hi guys many thanks for the replies.
i'll check the ram voltage once i get home from work.
i did load the latest bios for my board, how do i reset it ? (i told you i'm thick :D)

thanks
Neil

Just load optimized defaults and save. Then go back in and setup your bios from scratch. Also there is usually a jumper or reset button on the motherboard itself to do a total reset (same as removing the battery) as a last resort. Do this with the PSU disconnected or switched off at the back.

The boot you are describing is normal for some models when a board is switching between 266->333->400 FSB timing straps. My MSI P45 Platinum does the same when overclocked unless I set the jumper to start up at the required FSB speed (266, 333 or 400).

Sometimes the bios powes up the board, programs the FSB, settings and voltages, shuts down for a few seconds, then powers back up. It will only do this again if you pull the power completely from the board (ie switch the power off at the mains or the PSU switch), otherwise it will continue to boot normally.

That. My old board used to do it all the time when i used to pull out the power cord overnight.

Try leaving the power cord in/PSU switch on and leaving it a few hours after shutdown and see if it still happens.

hi chaps, first off let me say a massive thank you for all of your replies, i very much appreciate all of your help cheers.

earlier i reset the bios as advised & so far (touch wood) my pc is now booting up normally,or at least so far,so fingers crossed.

My p5q-e does it too,but only if its been completely unplugged, i think its the norm for p5q

hi mate,my pc actually boots fine whatever now even when it has been unplugged so i'm a happy badger :)

mind i've not tried to overclock it as yet, mainly because i don't know how too & i'm worried in case i make a mess of it.

cheers
