So next job is to fit some TRVs ready for winter, I've looked at a few youtube guides, and it seems easy enough.

Is it just a case of draining down the whole system (already found my drain port, nicely placed by the back door) buying a load of them and going for it?

Worth taking the rads of and flushing them at the same time? 20 year old system and don't think it's ever been 'powerflushed'

Then bottle of inhibitor poured in before closing up the system, and stupid question, how do you refill it? I didn't google that part yet!

Normally close to your boiler, here I have a little silver flex pipe with a black on / off value. Ensure that you are looking at your pressure gauge too when toping up / refilling your system.

ahhh one video had a section afterwards on balancing your rads/system afterwards, thats a totally different kettle of fish isn't it? Going to a spanner in the works I think.

I don't think my system has any gauges on it. Just a header tank in the loft, cylinder it cupboard boiler in kitchen.

I do think that a closed system is easier to work on.

Just ensure that you close all your draincocks / then restore the water supply to the feed and expansion tanks - you will trap air so do this once full - taking into account you may need to bleed your circulating pump also. I am sure there will be a you tube video somewhere

Don't forget to switch off your boiler!

It can be embarrassing if it fires up on the timer while you have the water drained down! :D

Also, though standard TRV's control the temp, they keep the same temp all the time.

I have used these Programable TRV's with some success.

(The only criticism is that they are audible when they operate and that the batteries will only last one year or so rather than the two years claimed, other than that I have found that the savings are considerable!)

If you drain it down remember to refill with inhibitor

And those programmable TRV's above... wtf £50 a piece?!?

Get some decent proper TRV's like Drayton TRV4's and whack thermostat/controllery doodah on yer boiler?

Divine~Wind is totally correct.

Drayton TRV4's are one of the best TRV available, I also would prefer to have these used with a good room stat, than those £50 programable TRV's.

Thanks for the input, this project is on the back burner for a few weeks, but Draytons + Inhibitor are on the list.

Filling with inhibitor will be easy when the system is drained down, just pour it into the top of one of the rads after the system has been drained and all pipes secured back up?

Worth running a bottle of sludge remover through the system before draining? Would the presumably need to drain then refill with just water, run it up to temp, drain again and then put the inhibitor in to stop mixing of chemicals in there? Unless the sludge remover and inhibitor are safe and don't react?

Could do like but it's a bit of a faff tbh the plumber we had here connected a hose to the lowest rad and ran that to a drain outside, fileld the system with water then drained it, filled with cleaner, drained it, fileld with water cleaned it. Then filled with water and added inhib, due to the leak I had to refill and add another bottle of inhib (which the plumber supplied free as was his joint leaking) just tipped it into the highest rad we had and let it run thru te system, no trouble since :)

As for the TRV's just set them accordingly and get yerself a decent thermostat if you dont have one already. I just got the best I could at the time which was a WB wireless to match the boiler
