Five recent shots + a 6th

Truth be told I've hardly been out much since I got my D2x back in January, due to an increase in work.

Thankfully thats all over now and things are getting back to normal, so I thought I'd share a few of the shots I've been taking when I have had the chance to use the camera. I'm trying to slowly steer myself away from wildlife only and to explore other types of photography, if for no other reason than so my others lenses get some use for once lol

All taken with the D2x and the weapon of choice for each one listed under the photos.

This is a stray cat that my sister has pretty much adopted. She's been named Dusty as she is always covered in it as she lives in the garden (scared of the dogs, bless).

Sigma 105mm macro, I spot metered off the eye to get the exposure right for this one as all the black was causing problems. This is ISO 800 too, which performed much better than expected!

My first ever flower photo and its....a daisy! Almost broke my neck trying to look through the viewfinder with the camera on the floor in my sisters garden.

Sigma 105mm macro again - brilliant lens, very very sharp!

My sisters little girl, she was watching tv on the sofa so I called her name and she looked over without moving her head - which was handy as I was resting the camera on my knee at 1/20th second f/2.8 and again ISO 800.

Sigma 105mm again!

Wanted a nice pheasant shot for ages so was pleased to finally get something worth keeping! I slowly crawled up to him whilst he was busy entertaining his 3 females! A neutral background would have been nice to show of his colours but I quite like the overall tone of this shot thanks to a low, late afternoon spring sun.

I get bored of plain blue sky bird in flight shots, probably because thats what most of the ones I take seem to be...
I quite liked this though because of the blur to the wings which made it 'slightly' different. The trick to exposing birds in flight on a clear sky is to dial in a +1 or even +1.3 exposure compensation.

So there you have it, a couple of recent shots to give you an idea of what I've been doing when I can.

Some very nice, and varied shots there. Love the first one, the exposure and dof is perfect imo. The daisy is possibly a tiny bit over exposed(the top of the petals seems a bit blown out.) Really nice portrait. The last two shot are still nice, but maybe not quite as good. I think it might be to do with the composition.

great portrait shot - especially as you took it at 1/20 @105mm! rock steady! (the rest are also very good). pheasant shot is the only one that doesnt do much for me.

Nice shots. The detail in the cat's eyes is superb, making it look very intent. As above, the weakest one for me is the pheasant - just lacking something.

OT: Love your website btw. Finally a flash website that isn't completely OTT :)

Thanks everyone. I think I'm attached to the pheasant shot mainly because of the effort involved in getting close enough to get the photo lol

The daisy isn't actually over exposed in the original, I processed it to a point where it was 'almost' so to make it nice and bright but I may have gone just that tiny bit too far so I'll have to keep an eye on that when processing in the future (my monitor is quite bright and hasn't been calibrated yet) so thanks for pointing that out :)

Nice pics, I woudl like to applaud you for the write ups for each one explaining how you got the shot, I wish every body did that, would help us newbies imeasurably (same with post processing)

Your very welcome. Its something I used to find helpful when I first started out in photography so I try to give a bit of info with my shots for that very reason, to help others.

My processing is always as minimal as I can get it. I tweak the curves/levels/saturation a little (I always use adjustment layers, one for each thing I am altering so I can remove or alter any tweaks I do very easily) and crop to suit if needed.

Very nice :).

Talking of Pheasants, we have a couple of males and several females which are always in our garden. Trying to photograph them is a nightmare, even though they do come to within a meter of you..

edit: smile :D

I wish I had stuff like that in my garden. I have to make do with chasing them around fields :D

That's my cat in the first one !!! And he's called Boddington, not dusty ;)

Good pics overall with good choice of DOF.

I love that candid shot. I'm currently toddling around with that lens as my walk around to try something different. I've spent about 2 years using the 50mm as my walk around lens and thought it was time for a change.

Great job for an impromptu candid.
