Hi guys,

As above, I've recently commissioned an old vista machine and all seems well apart from windows update. Specifically I get the red cross when I load it and when I try to update the system just hangs... if I try to check the update history I just get a blank white window with an 'ok' button :(

I've tried the microsoft fixit for this issue but no joy. Was wondering if anyone else had experience here?

Thanks.

Stop the windows update service
Delete the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Start the windows update service

See if it will then do Windows Updates for you :)

didn't even think vista was supported now after end of life statement etc, i just used a dvd will all the updates on made by someone online, got the same disk for xp and also win7 as well, updates if any new updates come out etc, save time and great tool disk when your in the field with no net or slow net etc

Fix it is basic, doesn't always work (and the op already stated this fact). System readiness was created (and still maintained) because of the update problems Microsoft created with vista, and subsequently windows 7.
