so, i installed vista on my laptop and although it could use a bit more memory all was good, pleasently surprising. I've used every version of windows since nt from an early stage and this is by far the most stable of them at this stage in it's life. so well done microsoft there

office 2007 works nicely too...

anyway, that said, when I get up tomorrow \i'm wiping it and putting xp back on...why...because i can't sync my bloody phone!!!

i've installed windows mobile device center as per the instructions (believe me i've done it 20 times and it hasn't made a difference) and done everything i can think of but when i plug the device in (a htc artemis for ref) it says connecting for a few minutes then says 'error' on the main screen.

I've done google, i've tried everything i can think of (i've got an mcse so i'm not short of ideas) but to no effect, it simply doesn't work!!

can anybody shed any light on this at all...

Could be a driver issue. Have you checked the phone companies website for notes/fixes/upgrades?

Do you get a Windows Autoplay box pop up when you plug it in? Or do you get the hardware plug in sound...?

it's a standard windows mobile phone, so should be supported without drivers according to microsoft, certainly it recognises basic functions fine (i can browse the device and it's memory card for instance) but the sync with outlook which i need simply doesn't work

I have an 02 orbit which is the uk incarnation of the htc artemis if i'm not mistaken. When I first pluged the phone in to vista I couldn't get it to sync either, but now it's working fine and fully syncs with outlook 2007 and onenote 2007. In your sync centre, have you got a an entry for your mobile device?
Also, what version of windows mobile device centre are you using? I could only find beta3 on the MS site, so have been using that.

I installed my phone yesterday, I found in the firewall type bit that when I clicked "I want to use my phone" or something silimlar it all suddenly started working perfectly. Before that Windows didn't pick up my mobile at all and I didn't bother to try really.

I used the Vista built in mobile thing, didn't install ANY additional software.

So basically, check your security settings. I found a checkbox which basically meant I had told Vista that I wanted to allow communication between Vista and my phone.

FYI, I have an HTC Tytn (or Vario 2 as Vodafone call it) running the Windows mobile gubbins. It now syncs with outlook, downloads my photos automatically to Windows Photo Album and all that other stuff. :)

Good luck!

yeah, i'd installed windows mobile device center as per the instructions, openned the firewall and everything.

no entry appeared in sync center.

in the end I did a system restore back to immediately after i'd installed windows and office and then it installed just fine, thank god for that...

I can only assume it didn't like one of the updates i did since...it's working but i'm not happy, took me hours and it doesn't speak well that 2 of their own products interoperate so badly.

Cheers for the suggestions guys, much appreciated...
