Fixed sized <div> with dynamic content - how?

I'm wanting to know the best way of putting previews of blog posts on the front page of my site, with a link to read the rest of the post at the end. At the moment I have the whole post loading but I wonder the best way to do this. Is there a way to fix the size of the <div> that it's in and hide the rest of the post while adding a read more link at the end?
