A friend of mine brought her computer round to my place as she is having problems with the Internet. I told her I would wipe the drive clean and reinstall everything so it was nice and tidy again.

But I was quite shocked to switch it on to find it's an AMD K6-500MHz, 128Mb RAM system running Windows XP Professional.

What do you reckon? Is it even worth spending any time on? Should I put it back to Windows 2000 or tell her nicely to come out of the dark ages and shell out for a new PC?

Ta!

I've had that running on a old AMD K6-300MHz ( i think it was) :D

So a AMD K6-500MHz should handly it nicely LOL :p

Yep tell her to get a new one!

Ah, well. I'm not messing about with it - her BIOS doesn't seem to support booting from CD-ROM (it's seven years old) so I'll just put SP2 on and AVG and leave it at that. She can lump it.

Just for browsin the net and typing in word you really don't need a monster machine, especially if your use to it being a bit sluggish, prolly doesn't have many programs running at a time either.

A stick of extra ram would prolly make a big diff in Windows actually, 128MB isn't great for 2K and XP'll run like a dog :p

get her some ram, 256 is about min for XP to work at any speed.
as long as she's not expecting games etc on it then 500MHz should be fine.

It needs at least 256mb ram and change the theme to the classic.

Also get rid of unnecessary startup items and untick 'Enable 3rd Party Browser Extension' under option in Internet Explorer.

Lastly, do Window's online live scanner to get rid of invalid registry entries, etc: http://safety.live.com/site/en-GB/default.htm

This pc should be good enough for internet after that.

My parents use a K6-2 500mhz with 256ram for the net with win98se and is perfectly fine apart from the od USB problem, seems faster sometimes than the 2.2 celeron I got

and dad uses a 468DX2S 66hz win 95 iirc for office!

Nothing wrong with an older pc!
