Fixing the 911's engine - Take 2

There is a ceramic bearing available as a replacement for the IMS.

My friend is a Porsche Specialist based here in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Have a look. http://www.dandgmotorengineers.co.uk

That's probably the LN engineering unit we were on about earlier, I'm now deciding if I want to split the crank case or not. A guy on the Porsche forum has offered me the lend of all the special tools and if I get my bearing out I can send it to Hartech for some love. I dunno I'll wait until I get the head in the week and make some decisions once I've spoken to Hartech/Porsche today.

You paid £2900 to have your car fixed, and the problem came back ?
Was there no warranty with that work ?

It's not like £2900 is a small sum of money. Porsche or not!

Yea I did and yes it did. It happens, chalk it up to experience and crack on, which is why I am taking a much more active part in this rebuild. :)

my 997.1 also had a new engine. I dont think I will ever want to own 996 or 997.1 without a warranty.

Hope you get this sorted

EDIT: Typo corrected

This doesn't look like a great application for a ceramic bearing since they tend to have lower load ratings than steel (higher contact stress since the balls don't deform as much under load) and can have more catastrophic failure modes (ceramic balls can shatter under impact load). It also appears that failure of the LN ceramic bearing is not unknown.

Can you get a direct oil feed kit for this engine? That would be where my money would go, along with a quality steel bearing.

Good news... The guy I sent my heads to has just let me know that he has me a head and he will send it to me tomorrow... Even better news £275 of absolute bargain and I've got the biggest smile :D

So happy that the biggest unknown is out of the way!

As far as I am aware there is one available not sure on the specifics though.

Jesus as low as 37k? what happened to it?

I dont know the ins and outs of it as it happen a few weeks after I sold the car but I think it must have been IMR/RMS failure.

I was trying to explain to the buyer why my car is worth more then other cars because of the 2 year warranty but he did not get it he thought I was just BS'ing him lol

Couldn't agree more a warranty on these things is a god send. I always tell people the same thing, they drive like nothing else and they put a huge smile on your face. But, and it's a big but, they have engines made of cheese
