Fixing the master boot record

I'm trying to fix a friends pc, it seems to have lost the master boot record on the xp disk. I've used a slax live cd to get the data off and now i'm trying to fix the boot record.

Using the ubcdwin disk with the recovery console, doesnt seem to work. It just sits on type exit to exit and restart. Using a copy of xp, i haven't got the option to enter the recovery console.

Anyone got any ideas, without me doing a full reinstall as he's lost the recovery disks as well?... :rolleyes:

Boot into dos and type fdisk /mbr problem is the disk has to be fat32 for it to work.

Boot into recovery console and type 'fixmbr' then hit enter.

using his copy of XP disk boot into recovery console and do what Dano said.
