So I've just moved and the new place which has dot and dab walls.

I bought some Rigifix M6 fixings to put up my wall cabinets and TV mounts however what would you use put up things such as mirrors, noticeboards, pictures, toilet roll holders and clocks? Using Rigifix for these light things would be overkill lol! :)

Would those metal self drive fixings work? or would they just ruin the plasterboard as there's only a small gap between the plasterboard and the blocks?

Thanks for your help :)

So we were in a similar position;

Drill a pilot hole to identify what material is behind the plasterboard;

If it's hollow, you can use hollow wall fixings or plasterboard wall plugs, If it says to drill a 5mm hole don't, drill a 4.5 and push the wall plug tight in.

If it's wood behind the plasterboard, cut the wall plug to fit before it hits the wood you can then just screw into the wood.

If it's dot and dab you need to drill into it and use a wall plug.

Avoid the self drill fixings, I hated them!

For non heavy pictures you can use http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005GPQJJK?pc_redir=1397988309&robot_redir=1

I used the hollow wall fixings for a 1.5m mirror I put up this weekend, 8mm fixings x2 job done.

Hope that helps

Just use some 35mm plasterboard fixings/plugs. Either the nylon or metal ones will work fine. Don't use ordinary brown/red wall plugs in a dot and dab wall, they won't hold jack. If you're wanting to put a longer screw in for something heavy then by all means try drilling in to the block behind and plugging but what tends to happen is when weight is on the screw it bends the screw and starts digging in to your plasterboard. A decent plasterboard fixing is designed to hold a vast amount of weight.

Here's what I use with my dot-dab walls.

Heavy items (bathroom mirror cabinet, TV wall mount, shelves etc)
DrylinePro fixings. Expensive, but very strong; the design of the plug stops the plasterboard being pulled towards the blockwork.

Medium weight items (towel rails, toilet roll holders, magnetic knife racks)
I used to use the 8mm version of this, but you can't buy seem to get them in the UK anymore. Such a shame, as it was the best fixing I've ever used.

So either the 10mm version above (a bit excessive), or Fischer universal plugs.

Light items (pictures)
Standard brass picture hooks.

I wouldn't recommend fixings that open behind the plasterboard. If you hit a dab, then you're stuffed. Plus there may not be enough room for the fixing to open properly.

You might get away with snap toggles for some of it (assuming it's deep enough behind) but to be honest rigifix is going to be your best bet for longevity.

Pictures you can just use picture hooks though if they're not properly framed.

Christ I hate dot and dab, whoever though it was a good idea needs to be shot.

Recommendation for dryline pro from me although obviously for dot and dab walls with internal block work. They really do a great job although are a bit pricey-£30 for 50 from memory.
