Quite possibly the motherboard that has gone by the sounds of it. Any chance of testing the cpu in another machine?

Got nothin else to test the CPU in. Shurly it should still atleast power up the fans even if the cpu was bust? right?!

Could the sudden surge from the psu have gone through the ide cable and shorted a whole load of traces on the board? Your motherboard is likely to be fried. If you were yanking it out rather than connecting it, it might've been ok :/

eek, cant believe you did that :p, i suppose now you know never to plug molex connectors into anything when the machine is turned on, best thing to do is just try each part in a different machine but it does sound like your motherboard has gone im afraid :(

 My mate just offerd to buy the pc about 3 days ago aswell. So now ive got to find out EXACTLY what the problem is before i can think about selling him it and i dont have another pc to try the parts in

You could try opening the PSU and seeing if anything has blown in there?

if you do that, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING INSIDE as they can store serious ammounts of power for very long periods of time ... i opened a PSU up once and as soon as i put it back together (didnt touch anything) it blew up in smoke, will never do it again

Did you try to connect the molex upside-down? I did that once with a hard drive and got the fizzle-pop-smoke-awful smell-dead hard drive

Ok, ive got a new mb today, when i bootup it beeps like this "beeeeeeeeeeeeep beep beep [pause] beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep beep beep!

Any ideas?

Video card error most likely. Try reseatng it, also was there any extra power supply that you needed to connect to the card and maybe forgot?

Sorted now thanks.

Ive also realised that the power switch just doesnt work on my CMstacker!
I dont fancy RMA'ing such a huge/heavy thing like that

Hi, if the board has a reset switch, then use that connected instead of the power switch to turn the system on, and maybe mod a spare 3.5 or 5 1/4 drive bay blanking plate thing with an reset switch out of an old PC to just use as a reset switch if needed.
