Just made a HUUUUGE decision to re-rip my whole CD collection in FLAC with EAC and have a couple of Q's . . .

1 - am I better off doing a WAV copy of each track - so that at least I have a proper backup? I know that I can then then convert the WAV into whatever I need!
2 - can someone tell me the definative settings for FLAC in EAC - the main variable is the bit rate
3 - should I "add ID3 Tags" in the options too?
4 - what other (ALL preferably) options whould I choose to achieve the BEST QUALITY sound - HDD space is not an issue!!!!

I only listen to music (all types) ripped from CD's - dont do games, downloads or movies and am using a Cowon iAudio7 + Shure SE530's.

Am just also about to upgrade my player - is the D2 the daddy of all Cowons in terms of music quality or should I be looking at another option (Cowon or other with FLAC capability)

1. I don't think so, ripping them straight to FLAC shouldn't be a problem. The only thing I can think of is using your songs in an MP3 player - not all players support the format. I would happily recommend the Sony NWZ player - but it doesn't support FLAC. :(

Cannot honestly remember, but thanks for the reminder totally forgot about ripping all my CDs after I re-format this week.

I'm sure I had a link to the best settings somewhere so will have a root around. Otherwise go to the head-fi forum and search over there, I'm sure my settings were in a thread there.

FLAC is lossless is it not? So the variable setting just affects the file size / how long it takes to encode....

No. Wavs will just take up more space. Think of FLAC as just being a compression of the file. Absolutely no audio quality is lost and you'll end up with an exact replica of the cd if you decide to reburn from the FLACs using EAC.

Follow guide in link at end and you will end up with the perfect rip.

No. Vorbis comments will be automatically added. ID3s are for mp3 etc.

Follow this guide carefully if you want THE best. It may look a lot longer than it actually takes to set up; mostly you can just follow diagrams and you'll be done within a few minutes but I would recommend reading it thoroughly before you start as it will give you a good basic understanding of the process. Once you are set up once correctly with EAC then your profile will stay the same and you'll never need to change it again. Take the time to do it properly and you'll not have to re-rip again:

You'll end up with a folder for the album containing each song in FLAC format, an m3u playlist file, a log file and a cue file.

If you like, after you've ripped your first CD either post the log file here or email it to me and i will carefully check it as it will tell me all the settings you are using and i'll be able to see if there are any corrections that need to be made. My email is in trust.

PM is disabled on the forum. Click on the trust button at the bottom of my post and you can access my email address but you may have to set up your own trust before you can do that.
