Flash animation help

Hi Guys,

Never done any real "graphics" work, and I wanted to design a flash movie (for my academic site).

Can anyone tell me where to even start on this. What software do I need, can you guys point me to some good guides. Is there (more importantly!) any free software to do this?

Ha ha the limit of my knowledge is animated GIFs!
