I have some basic knowledge in PHP, MySQL, CSS and HTML and am reasonably good at using Photoshop. I new to flash however and I am wondering how hard it is to make something like this:

Has anyone here done anything like this before? I would also be interested in making the flash script dynamic. Would that be difficult?

Thanks

Just like any type of development it requires time, patience, and trial/error to do. Grab yourself the Adobe Flash CS3 trial version and give it a whirl. It's all WYSIWYG, not much coding involved. I think it includes templates for stuff like you see on that site.

FWIW, I personally hate Flash websites.

I doubt that'd be hard to make dynamic, I don't know much about flash, but my guess is you'd just make a table in which the 'blocks' are and print out a bunch of database entries into that table in a loop (just like you would in a normal PHP script, just in flash).

I also don't really like flash websites unless they're really really really really well done (most aren't).

You might be best off learning advanced HTML, CSS, maybe some PHP and then using flash for e.g. banners and small sections of a website.

Small bits of flash to add functionality is fine on a web page, but I personally don't like full on flash sites.

Yeah, flash websites do not look good in most cases and are highly inaccessible so you must provide a fallback which a lot of flash sites don't have. It's fine for video and small embedded objects such as slideshow or a animation but there should always be an alternative because flash isn't that widely installed, especially in corporate environments.

me too some reason
I know exactly why I don't like them. They're slow to load, slow to navigate, unsearchable (I can't just search for the text I'm looking to find), they don't work on half of my computers because Adobe won't release a player for them, they get broken when I want to block scripts, and worst of all hog my processor and memory doing something that I wish it wouldn't.

ah yes i remember now thats why i don't like them either

A few small fading in and out Flash images for example, you can get away with.

But websites based around Flash completely, I do not like.

Some sites manage to carry it off ok, with minimal fuss, but badly done Flash based websites make me reach for the "Back" button every time.

It's the same with those Flash Templates that the likes of Template Monster sell.

Generic rubbish that is both difficult to edit properly for your own needs and looks awful in most cases, no matter how clever the animations are.

That said, the likes of Template Monster sell a lot of these things, so fair play to them although I have no idea just who is purchasing the templates and for what use!!!

Well I know that this sort of thing can be done with Mootools but the JS in mootools seems to be quite tough. Has anyone had experience with this...I know NOTHING about java.

Google hates flash. It can just about spider the text now, but a flash website is still harder to get good SEO results on. Remember, if you're not on the first couple of pages for your keywords you don't exist.

I'd put your time into getting good at PHP and CSS - I too detest Flash websites. That gallery thing is a perfect example. Slow, uses far too much CPU, prioritises form over function, breaks browser navigation, probably not searchable or indexable.

I can never understand why all films and lots of bands have Flash websites. They're so hard to use.
