Flash firing problem

I'm hoping one of you could kindly help with a strange problem. I have been trying to use a 430EX flash via an off-shoe cord.

With the cord attached to the flash but not the camera it will fire if I short the contacts.

The flash fires fine when attached to the camera hot shoe.

So, despite the camera hotshoe, cord and flash apparently being in working order the flash doesn't fire with all three connected together. The camera doesn't detect the flash as the display doesn't show FEC compensation. Neither does the flash display change from 35mm.

Any ideas?

I thought the same but marking the camera hotshoe contacts then attaching the cord clearly shows all five pins making good contact.

If the cord is attached with the to rear pins not contacting the flash will fire but without TTL metering.
